Those of you looking for a quiet getaway from Toronto or the GTA that isn’t going to take you hours and hours to get to are definitely going to want to consider checking out the beautiful Beachwood Resort.
The resort is located in the heart of the scenic Kawartha Lakes region just 2 hours away from downtown Toronto and a short 20-minute drive from Peterborough.
It’s close enough that you can drive without having to spend the day in the car and it’s secluded enough that you can still get that outdoor cottage getaway experience that you’re looking for.
It doesn’t matter if you’re traveling with your family and you want to spend a few days with your kids or you and your partner want a quiet experience away from busy city life, the Beachwood Resort is a great place to spend a few days getting off the grid and reconnecting with nature.
With a restaurant on site, various options for accommodation depending on your budget and preferences, and plenty of both indoor and outdoor activities to do at the resort itself, Beachwood is found to leave you feeling satisfied and refreshed by the time you’re ready to head home.
I was fortunate enough to spend two nights at the resort and in this post I want to share with you the experience that I had visiting the Beachwood Resort as well as provide you with some helpful tips and information if you’re planning your own trip to the area.
The Beachwood Resort: A Getaway to the Kawartha Lakes
At the end of a quiet country road is where you’ll find the Beachwood Resort.
You wouldn’t know it but Peterborough is just 20 minutes away and there are a surprising number of small towns in the local area, though despite its central location the resort is quite secluded.
As soon as I drove off of the main road leading up to the property it was like civilization disappeared behind me and I was finally able to take a deep breath, turn off my smartphone, and relax on the beautiful shores of Lower Buckhorn Lake.
The resort is situated right on a lake that makes up the border between the St. Lawrence Lowlands and the Canadian Shield which results in a unique geographical position as well as incredible lakefront scenery for you to enjoy.
With 30 different units at the resort you would think that it would be quite busy and crowded but I didn’t find this to be the case at all and even when everybody was outdoors enjoying themselves the sprawling property still made for a peaceful experience.
Surrounding the resort is a heavily wooded area with plenty of opportunities for hiking and checking out some of the natural beauty of the Kawartha Lakes region.
Alternatively you could head out onto the lake to kayak or canoe through some of the small rock islands formed by glaciers or you can spend your days fishing on the dock waiting for that next big catch.
Depending on your preferences and your budget you can go with a small lodge room in the main building or you could opt for a larger lakeside cottage that sleeps up to 12 people.
Many of the rooms have an incredible view of the lake where you can wake up early to watch the sunrise or just relax beside a window admiring the stillness of the water.
One thing I really liked about the resort is that there is a casual dining restaurant on the property, Frederick’s at Beachwood, and this combined with the fact that breakfast comes included means you don’t have to leave if you don’t want to – you can simply spend your entire visit enjoying the serenity that the resort provides.
My Stay at the Beachwood Resort
For the two nights that I spent at the resorts I stayed in one of the rooms located on the second floor of the lodge and it was a perfect size and layout for both me and my partner.
With its lakefront location I was hoping for a room that offered a great view of the lake and thankfully as soon as I open the door to the room I was excited to find a dedicated screened-in patio room with a 180 degree of the beautiful lake and surrounding property.
The patio room had some comfortable seating and this made a very easy to enjoy the natural setting of the resort without having to sit outside and deal with mosquitoes.
Even the main bedroom area that came equipped with a double bed and a single bed offered a great view of the lake and the windows let in plenty of natural light and fresh air throughout the day.
I found the room to be spacious enough for two people with the only thing that I found lacking was a desk that I could use to get some work done.
Otherwise, the room was fully equipped with everything that one or two people would need for a short-term stay and despite reading some reviews where some guests complained about having the sink in the room I didn’t find a problem with that at all.
Surprisingly even the wifi was good throughout the entire day and I was able to maintain a steady connection so that I could use social media and browse some websites online.
The bathroom at the Beachwood was small but featured a practical layout with just a shower and toilet taking up the bathroom space.
Having the sink outside of the bathroom really helped to open up the dedicated bathroom area so it wasn’t as cramped as it could have been and it was no problem at all using the sink in the bedroom area of the room.
Towels were provided free of charge and there were some basic amenities that you could use if you happened to forget anything at home.
Overall, the bathroom once about what you would expect from an Ontario lodge or cottage type of accommodation and despite not coming with any unique features or aspects I really have no complaints.
One of my favorite things at the Beachwood Resort was the large heavily wooded property along with the beautiful lakefront setting.
Easily accessible from the resort are a few different hiking trails that vary in difficulty and in less than 5 minutes you can get fully submerged into the woods.
There was a small sand beach along with a selection of different watercraft to choose from including things like canoes, paddle boats, and kayaks.
I do believe that it is even possible to rent a boat from the resort if you wanted to get some fishing done out on the lake or explore some of the other areas nearby.
A great addition for kids or anyone that likes spending time on the water was the inflatable water slide and trampoline set up that really helped to provide a more entertaining outdoor experience for anybody helping to enjoy themselves swimming.
There was a large field in the back of the property that my girlfriend and I used for playing frisbee and there’s also a tennis court if you were interested in playing.
The grounds themselves were very well maintained and everything was in proper working order with a huge amount of seating so that you were never left having to find somewhere to sit.
During my stay I always noticed people spending time outdoors on the grass in front of the lake and it’s a great meeting spot if you wanted to meet other visitors to the resort.
On the main level of the lodge is a large seating area that boasts a very cottage-like design, a small gift shop, and the restaurant where breakfast and dinner are served every day.
The resort has a great location just 20 minutes north of Peterborough and a reasonable 2 hour drive away from Toronto making it a suitable choice for anybody living in the big city looking for a quiet nature getaway.
The property is easily accessible by car and there are quite a few small towns in the surrounding area if you wanted to explore the local region or check out some of the nearby cafes, restaurants, and small shops.
Also nearby are some of the historic Trent Severn Waterway locks and I would recommend checking those out as well.
Helpful Tips for Visiting
I actually had an amazing time at the resort and visiting was rather straightforward and simple so I don’t have any specific tips to share with you.
Everyone I spoke with was extremely friendly, helpful, and any time I had any questions or concerns they were immediately dealt with by whoever I ended up speaking with.
There are plenty of resorts in the area to choose from, such as the more upscale Viamede Resort (check out my Viamede review), although if you’re looking for something a little bit more laid back and secluded that offers a much more personal travel experience that I would definitely recommend visiting the Beachwood Resort.
