When it comes to the best fall destinations in the Northeast you’ll be hard-pressed to find anywhere better than the Adirondack Mountains.
Nestled right in the heart of the mountain range and made popular by two different winter Olympic hosting events is Lake Placid and this is where my girlfriend and I decided to spend a few days to take advantage of the beautiful fall colors.
Driving down from Toronto the colors started to change from light green and dull brown to vibrant oranges, reds, and yellows as we got closer to Lake Placid and as the Adirondack Mountains started to loom right in front of us.
We chose Lake Placid as our fall destination because it offered easy access to the nearby hiking trails as well as plenty of amenities and things to do in Lake Placid itself making it a great choice to visit without getting too far off the beaten path.
During our trip to Lake Placid we spent two wonderful nights at the Mirror Lake Inn, voted as one of the best waterfront resorts in North America, and when it comes to luxury accommodation in Upstate New York you really won’t find anything better.
In this post I want to share with you the experience that I had at the Mirror Lake Inn so that you can get a better idea of what to expect if you’re planning a visit and hopefully I can convince you to stay if you’re still looking for accommodation in Lake Placid.
The Mirror Lake Inn: A Luxury Hotel in Lake Placid
Since the 1930s the Mirror Lake Inn has operated as a family-run hotel and this translates into a much more personal and unique experience than you would find if you are staying at a typical hotel chain.
All of the small details are looked at from a perspective where the guest is put first rather than just dollar signs and expenses so you’ll noticed that nothing has been overlooked when you’re staying at the Mirror Lake Inn.
The moment that you walk through the main doors into the lobby you’re treated with a level of respect and kindness that you don’t find too often these days and the staff truly seem to care about your well-being while ensuring you’re having the best possible experience at the hotel.
As the hotel has been running for so long under the same management many of the staff have been working at the property for more than thirty years, something else that you won’t find anywhere else in Lake Placid, and these are the people that truly make an impact on how much you’re enjoying your stay even though most of it might be happening behind the scenes.
For a short-term stay in Lake Placid the Mirror Lake Inn is bound to provide you with everything you might need or want and I’m positive that if something arises that is a provided that the hotel staff will do everything they can to make sure that you’re taken care of.
At no point during my stay did I experience any problems with any aspect of the hotel and in my Mirror Lake Inn review I hope I can share with you all of the great details about the property and convince you that is definitely where you want to spend a night or two if you’re visiting Lake Placid.
A Mirror Lake Inn Review: My Experience at the Hotel
Check-In and Interior
After parking the hotel in the driveway out front of the lobby I walked into the main building and was immediately blown away by the impressive yet traditional Adirondack style of interior design.
Everywhere I looked there was wooden accents, rustic furnishings, and the roaring fireplace really helped to make me feel welcome, cozy, and right at home.
The lobby and seating area on the main floor was very uniquely designed and felt a lot more comfortable than what you find at many other hotels that tend to take a more sterile approach.
Even at the receptionist desk was a small plate of cookies and after reading us the receptionist pointed us to the corner where we could grab some coffee or tea which was very much appreciated after our long drive from Toronto.
After checking us in and giving us some details about the hotel I explored the main floor just to see what was going on and if it was worth visiting later.
The main floor seating area is full of a selection of comfortable and cozy seating and later on in the day I would come back and relax by the fireplace with my laptop just getting some work done in such a charming setting.
The entire interior of the hotel was designed very similarly with the Adirondack style of design and it really felt like you were visiting the family cottage or spending time at a mountain lodge rather than somewhere that’s just steps away from downtown Lake Placid.
Once I was done exploring the main areas of the hotel I finally made my way up to the room to see what it had in store.
Right after opening the door to the room I noticed a large window at the end of the living space so I quickly ran over to check out the view.
The view from the room was simply incredible with the sprawling panoramic view of Mirror Lake, part of the Lake Placid business district, and off in the distance I could even see the Adirondack Mountain range.
In the morning I was able to enjoy a beautiful sunrise over Mirror Lake from the comfort of my room and the view was one of the best parts of our experience here at the hotel.
After admiring the view for a short while and taking plenty of photos I turned around to check out the rest of the room and was immediately surprised by how spacious it was and how high the ceilings were.
The high ceilings and large windows made the room very bright and gave it a spacious and airy feel.
There were two small seating areas – one right beside the sliding doors where you could relax and enjoy the incredible view and another seating area right behind it with a couch and coffee table.
There was a desk where I was able to get some work done during my stay as well as plenty of storage areas like a dresser and wardrobe that my girlfriend used for her luggage and clothing.
In the center of the room was a large post bed where I had some of the best sleep of the year thanks to the comfortable mattress and cozy sheets.
I really liked the wood accents with the bedposts and this combined with the dark furniture helped to continue with the Adirondack theme that was present throughout the rest of the hotel.
One more feature I want to mention is that there was a small sink in the main living space in the room and I found this to be quite unique.
For my girlfriend that I this sink was great to have as I was able to use the sink in the main living space while my girlfriend used the bathroom for getting ready in the morning.
Overall, I was definitely more than satisfied with how comfortable the room was as well as all of the small details and it was perfectly well equipped for two people for a short-term stay.
The bathroom at the Mirror Lake Inn was surprisingly modern and very well equipped with everything you would need if you’re planning a visit to Lake Placid.
A selection of towels were available, bathrobes were provided, and there were a few amenities such as soap, shampoo, hand lotion, and some other useful items.
In the amenities there was even a little bit balm and my girlfriend really appreciated having this available for her instead of having to use her own.
The wooden accents in the bathroom also helped to continue on with the general Adirondack theme that is present throughout the rest of the hotel so you never really forget that you’re spending time up in the mountains.
Overall, for two people the bathroom is very spacious and well-equipped and it comes with everything that you would need for a short-term stay.
Depending on the type of room that you choose you can find rates for the Mirror Lake Inn starting at around $200 USD and ranging up to $1000 per night.
You’re going to be able to find better rates during the off-season with the rates being the most expensive during the peak summer and winter travel periods.
I believe that every room comes with a nice view so you don’t have to worry about missing out on having an amazing view of Mirror Lake if you’re traveling on a budget.
Some of the rooms come with breakfast, though not all of them do, so be sure to double-check your rate to see if breakfast is included because it’s definitely worth it.
For a luxury hotel in Lake Placid I find that these rates are quite reasonable and comparable to the other higher end hotels in the area.
As always, I recommend booking your room as soon as you have confirmed your travel dates so that you can secure the best possible rate and avoid any potential issues with availability.
The location of the Mirror Lake Inn is definitely one of the best aspects of the hotel and you’re bound to appreciate it regardless of the reason why you’re visiting.
The hotel is located just outside of the downtown district of Lake Placid although it’s just a five-minute walk to the many shops and restaurants so you’re never too far away from the action.
The road right out front of the property runs around the entire Mirror Lake and it’s a great way to start off your day by going for a relaxing walk along the entire loop.
Just a short drive away are plenty of opportunities for hiking and adventuring in the outdoors depending on what you’re hoping to do during your trip and the receptionist’s working at the front desk will be able to arrange anything that you want to get done in Lake Placid.
What I love most about the location is that the hotel is a little bit set back from the road and not directly in the downtown area so it’s much quieter and a lot more relaxing than someone with a busier and more central location.
There are plenty of options for dining at the hotel if you don’t want to venture out into the city and you just want to park your car and relax at the property.
There are three different levels of dining depending on your budget and what you feel like eating for the night and these include:
- The View Restaurant (an upscale fine dining experience)
- Taste Bistro and Bar (mid-range dining with a premium selection of options)
- The Cottage Restaurant (the most casual dining experience with budget-friendly prices)
All of the restaurants use fresh ingredients with the farm-to-table mindset and regardless of where you choose to dine you’re able to enjoy locally-sourced and high quality ingredients with all of the menu items.
Each of the restaurants provides a beautiful view of the Mirror Lake and Adirondack Mountains that you’re able to enjoy during your meal.
You can also take advantage of innovative cocktails, local craft beers, and a decent selection of wines along with meticulously chosen menu options so that you’re bound to leave with a lasting memory of your dining experience.
The restaurants at the Mirror Lake Inn are quite popular with both locals and tourists so I recommend making a reservation if you’re planning on dining at the hotel.
Spa and Pool
For the ultimate in relaxation it’s possible to enjoy an experience at the spa and pool at the Mirror Lake Inn.
There is an award-winning spa at the hotel that you can enjoy during your stay with a wide range of different products, services, and treatments available to choose from for fairly competitive prices.
There’s also a large pool area where you can go for a quick swim in the morning to get some laps in for exercise or just lounge around with your friends and family during the day.
Depending on what you’re looking for, there’s a small salon that offers manicures and pedicures as well as a hair salon if you’re hoping to grab a new haircut.
These different amenities really take a stay at the Mirror Lake Inn to the next level and provide you with a completely unique experience that not too many places can ever offer.
The last thing I want to talk about are all of the activities and other things to do at the hotel.
During the summer months you can enjoy the heated outdoor pool that overlooks Mirror Lake and you can choose to paddle across the lake with the complementary paddle boards, kayaks, canoes, paddle boats, or row boats.
There is a private sandy beach that you can relax on or go swimming without having to worry about the busy summer crowds.
For golfers, the Whiteface Club offers a premium golfing experience as one of the oldest courses in the country and one of the best places to go golfing in all of the United States.
During the winter months you can head out onto the lake and spend your time on the private skating rink, explore local trails with complimentary snowshoes, or just relax in the indoor heated pool.
Regardless of how you plan on spending your time with the hotel there are countless things to do in Lake Placid when you’re staying at the Mirror Lake Inn
Lake Placid is a wonderful place to visit and your trip to this beautiful lakeside town can only be made better by a stay at the Mirror Lake Inn.
This hotel really has it all and I doubt that you’d be able to find anywhere better to stay in all of Upstate New York.
There are definitely quite a few different hotels in Lake Placid to choose from, and even some mid-range to luxury accommodation options as well, but after spending two nights at the Mirror Lake Inn i’ve come to the conclusion that it’s definitely where I’d recommend staying if you’re visiting the area.
The location is ideal for exploring Lake Placid and the surrounding Adirondack mountains, the interior design of the hotel is charming and welcoming, and overall the quality of service goes above and beyond any expectations you might have.
As for the price, I find that it’s quite reasonable for such a quality hotel with such a high standard of service so I’d recommend taking a look at the Mirror Lake Inn if you’re planning a visit to Lake Placid in the future.
