There’s hardly anywhere in Europe like Zermatt and it seems that life slows down the second you step on the cable car and start making your way up to the Matterhorn.

The next best thing to the complete bliss you’ll experience when you’re standing on the top of the world high up in the Swiss Alps is the comfort you’re able to take advantage of at your hotel.

When it comes to comfortable hotels in Zermatt I can hardly think of a better one than the Unique Hotel Post.

When it comes to style, design, luxury and location it’s hard to go wrong with the Unique Hotel Post and not only did it enhance my visit to Zermatt but it made it a completely memorable and once-in-a-lifetime experience as well.

If you’re looking to ski to your room or find somewhere secluded to stay then keep looking, but if you want to utmost in luxury and somewhere cosy to rest your feet after a long day of gallivanting in the Swiss Alps then this is the place for you.

With so many different things to do in Zermatt the last thing you want to worry about is choosing the right hotel so in this post I want to go over my experience with the Unique Hotel Post and explain why I think that it’s really the only place you should consider staying.

The Unique Hotel Post in Zermatt, Switzerland

hotel post

Since 1875, when the hotel opened with just 20 beds for the guests under the name of “Hotel de la Poste”, the Hotel Post has been striving to improve the quality of comfort offered and continuously sets the bar in regards to the standards available for accommodation in Zermatt.

In 2007 the entire building underwent huge renovations and reconstruction and this result in the glorious structure and impressive interior that you see today.

It’s not just a hotel however, apart from the rooms for guests looking to enjoy the Swiss Alps there are also 5 bars and clubs, 3 restaurants and 1 pub all on the same location so you never have to venture far to find what you’re looking for.

As for the Matterhorn, the most important thing for many people visiting Zermatt, it can be seen from many of the rooms that are facing it as long as the weather permits and the best view of the Matterhorn in all of Zermatt can be had from the multi-level Matterhorn Suite that takes up the top floor of the hotel.

From the suite you’re able to enjoy unspoiled views of the Matterhorn as well as take in the sights and sounds of 360-degrees of viewing angle of the city down below.

Well, with some of the details out of the way, let’s get into my review and experience.

My Review of the Hotel Post in Zermatt

Check-In and Interior

checking into the hotel

The quality standard of service received at this hotel starts at the moment you walk through the front door and make your way to reception.

I was greeted by a young man who immediately asked about my journey to Zermatt and before bringing up any details asked if I wanted some water, juice or Prosecco.

I declined, since I just wanted to get to the room and relax, and he quickly took my passport, filled out some paperwork and then brought me to my room.

As I was walking around the hotel I couldn’t help but notice the blend of rustic Alpine theme with modern and stylish design.

It was quite peaceful walking through the hallways, smelled quite nice and I couldn’t wait to open the door and see what my room was like.

Before I even got to my room I was already impressed with the design and modern look of the interior of the hotel and I already could tell I was definitely going to enjoy my stay at the Hotel Post.

The Room

The concierge that walked me up to the room showed me in and gave me some quick details on the lighting and wifi info.

I could hardly hear what he was saying because I was so shocked by the size of the room that I could see from the entrance way that I honestly couldn’t wait for him to leave so I could throw down my bags and explore.

entrance to the room

Finally he turned around to leave and before he shut the door I was already running up the stairs (yes, there were different levels in this room) to see what was on the top.

I suspected a balcony of sorts and as soon as I made my way to the upper exterior of the room I jumped in joy at what lay before me.

matterhorn

Not only did I have a clear and direct view of the Matterhorn but there was an unobstructed 360-degree view of Zermatt down below.

I stood on the balcony for close to an hour before making my way back inside to check out the rest of the room and I can safely say that the best view of the Matterhorn in Zermatt is from the top floor balcony of the Hotel Post.

amenities available

After checking out the rest of the room, or should I say suite (well actually it was more like an apartment), there were a few things I noticed.

There was plenty of space available and definitely enough room for at least a family of four people.

The lighting was abundant thanks to the many different windows throughout the entire suite and apart from the rooftop balcony there was also two more balconies that could be accessed from the main level.

dining room

Some other notable features included a dining room area that had a bed built into the wall cupboard that could easily accommodate some more people and there was an electric fireplace in the main living space as well to make the entire place more cozy during the colder winter months.

The ceilings were high and this made the living space seem even bigger than it already was and everything on the interior was covered in a soft colored wood paneling.

bedroom

Everything about the room was impressive and less than an hour after arriving at the hotel it became one of the most memorable parts of my visit to Switzerland.

Enough about the room, let’s take a look at some more of the finer details.

The Bed

comfortable bed with fur blanket

The bedroom area and the bed in the Matterhorn Suite at the Hotel Post is separated from the rest of the living space by a series of stairs.

There also isn’t any window access so it’s easy to sleep in and you don’t have to worry about the sun shining directly into your eyes too early in the morning.

I found the bed to be quite comfortable and I was able to sleep the entire night without any issues at all.

There were lamps available and plenty of flat spaces for storing any smartphones, laptops, cameras or any other devices you need to quickly access before heading out to explore.

A TV was placed on a small table near the end of the bed and there was even a comfortable seat to relax on.

From the bedroom space you could look down onto the entire living space of the suite and keep an eye on what was going down below.

The Wi-Fi

I’m traveling a lot these days and it’s important for me to have suitable internet connection so I can upload photos, videos and just browse the web without any issues.

I actually spent so much time outside of the room during my visit to Zermatt but I was still able to use the wifi quite a bit.

Overall, the connection was quite strong and although it wasn’t the fastest internet I’ve ever used it was more than reliable enough for web browsing and photo uploading.

I could add some photos to upload and could leave for a short while without having to worry about the connection dropping or having to manage any issues with the web timing out.

I didn’t try to upload any videos.

For the majority of travelers the internet is more than suitable enough for basic web browsing and social media access.

The Bathroom

beautiful hotel bathroom

Just like the hotel and the main living area of the room the bathroom was amazing as well.

There were actually two parts to the bathroom – one small room with a toilet and sink and another huge room with a shower, sinks and bathtub.

Having the two separate rooms is great because it means that if one person is having a shower or bath then it’s still possible to use the toilet without anyone having their privacy invaded.

The main bathroom with the shower and bathtub was absolutely stunning and the dark material that the room was designed from gave it a modern and stylish look which actually made it seem like I was stepping into the future any time I went in the bathroom.

jacuzzi tub

The bathtub was enormous and even had jets on the bottom so it was possible to take a nice long bath after a long day of hiking around Zermatt while having the jets pulse into all the sore areas.

What’s great about the tub is that once you’re laying it you actually have a view out of the window towards the Matterhorn – it’s literally one of the best bathtub views ever!

The shower was also spacious and featured a rainfall shower-head which is one of my favorite features when it comes to hotel rooms.

hotel shower

There were two different sinks in the larger bathroom, his and hers I suppose, and one nifty feature is that the huge mirror actually had a light bar so even though the room didn’t get much direct sunlight there was always plenty of room available.

As for the amenities, there were some soaps, shampoos and body creams available and all of them smelled quite nice and were made from natural ingredients.

The bathroom is definitely one of the highlights of the Matterhorn Suite at the Hotel Post and you’re definitely going to want to take a nice long bath if you ever get a chance to visit.

The Details

Cost

I checked the prices for a random night in November and depending on the room you choose you can expect to pay anywhere between $274 USD all the way up to $504 USD per night.

Keep in mind that the Matterhorn Suite will cost a little bit more and you’ll have to contact the hotel to find out more about pricing and availability.

Zermatt is a very expensive place to visit in Europe and I would argue that the price for this hotel is quite reasonable given the quality of service and the potential for an incredible view of the Matterhorn.

If you’re looking for something more budget-friendly you’ll have to consider staying in Tasch and taking the train into Zermatt.

Location

view from the balcony at the hotel

The Hotel Post is located right in the center of Zermatt on the main pedestrian walkway that cuts through the heart of the city.

The train station is a short 5-10 minute walk away and within 5-minutes are a wide variety of different shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, grocery stores and anything else you would need for a comfortable stay.

I recommend checking out the small Fuchs bakery across the street and picking up one of their little Matterhornli chocolates – it’s the real Toblerone!

To reach the cable car to head up to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise it’s about a 15-minute walk and the cable car for the Gornergrat is a bit closer and only about 5-10 minutes away.

The location of the hotel is quite superb and it’s right in the center of where you’re going to want be when you’re visiting Zermatt.

Breakfast and On-Site Restaurants

breakfast

I was quite pleased with the breakfast at the Hotel Post except for the lack of warm options.

Other than not being able to enjoy anything warm except for hard-boiled breakfast the breakfast was about what you would expect at a higher-end European hotel.

A selection of coffee and hot tea drinks were available to be ordered and there were quite a few options in regards to food choices as well.

There were many different breads available, some cold cuts and sliced cheese, smoked salmon, cereals, yogurt, jam, butter, pastries and a selection of different juices.

The selection was quite big and I definitely didn’t leave hungry or wanting more so overall breakfast went quite well.

It’s held in one of the hotel restaurants so you also get to enjoy a nice setting with a cosy ambience while you’re eating.

As for the restaurants, there are quite a few different places to eat and drink at the Hotel Post like I already mentioned and I actually ate at the Spaghetti and Pizza Factory restaurant.

pizza factory

They had a special, a pizza and a beer for 25 Swiss Francs, so I opted for the pizza with pepperoni.

Service was quite quick and the pizza was delicious so the dining experience ended up being quite satisfactory.

The menu for dinner had a large selection and for the city the prices were quite reasonable.

I would definitely recommend checking out one of the restaurant options during your stay at the hotel if you’re ever looking for something good to eat for lunch or dinner.

Alternatively, if you’re just looking for a quick drink you can head to one of the bars on-site as well.

Parking and Accessibility

underground parking

Parking in Zermatt is not possible at all and if you’re driving you’ll have to park at a covered parking garage in the city of Tasche at the bottom of the mountain.

You can find more information about that here.

From the parking lot you have to take a train into the city but don’t worry about walking if you’re not able to or if you have too much luggage.

The hotel has a free shuttle service that will pick you up or drop you off depending on whether you’re arriving or departing.

For this service you simply need to call the hotel in advance and let them know your arrival time or just ask at the front desk and they’ll arrange it for you when you’re leaving.

If you want to walk it’s only a short 5-10 minute walk from the station to the hotel.

Final Verdict

For anyone visiting Zermatt I would highly recommend taking a look at the Hotel Post.

It’s an incredible place and it isn’t only a comfortable place to spend the night – it actually enhances the Zermatt experience and makes for a much more memorable trip.

I can hardly think of a single negative thing to say about the hotel and if you’re looking for somewhere modern, luxurious and with an ideal location for explore then it’s the Unique Hotel Post that I recommend.

From the large and spacious rooms with great views to the choice of restaurants and other activities possible on-site there’s hardly a better hotel in the city.
