These days there are quite a few different options to choose from when it comes to chairs that are suitable to take with you camping.
There are ultra-portable ones that resemble a stool more than they do a chair and there’s the heavier, yet more comfortable ones that have arm-rests, back support, cup holders, and other nifty features.
After browsing online I wanted to come up with a list of the different options that I recommend for you to check out that I thought would make suitable camping chairs depending on what it is you’re looking for.
Keep in mind that there isn’t a single best camp chair that’s applicable to everyone’s needs but my different recommendations down below should help act as a starting point for your own research.
With that in mind let’s take a look at my different recommendations!
The Best Camping Chairs for Most Campers
Coleman Oversized Quad Chair
It’s the Coleman Oversized Quad Chair that I would recommend taking a look at if you’re looking for a chair to use that’s well-suited for car camping and general use.
It features a padded back-rest and seat, and there’s even this awesome cooler that’s built into the armrest that can fit up to 4-cans and keep them cool so they’re ready for you to drink.
A mesh cup holder in the other armrest is where you can keep a 5th drink for quick access and there’s even a storage pocket where you can stash a magazine, book, or smartphone when you’re at the beach or just trying to relax.
As for the armrests, the height of them can be adjusted depending on what you find comfortable and the chair itself is made from a heavy-duty steel frame that can support up to 300 lbs.
For transporting around, this chair can be folded up and it comes with a carrying bag that makes it even easier to manage.
When it comes to camping gear I believe that Coleman is quite a popular company, especially for entry-level and just general use gear, and if you’re going car camping or spending some time at the cottage and you want somewhere comfortable to sit then I would recommend checking out the Coleman Oversized Quad Chair.
Kijaro Dual Lock Folding Chair
The Kijaro Dual Lock Folding Chair takes advantage of a dual lock technology that locks it in the open and closed position depending on whether you’re using it or keeping it stored.
When it’s locked open you’re able to enjoy a no-sag seating experience that helps to keep the fabric tight and when it’s locked closed you don’t have to worry about the legs splaying everywhere and it coming open while you’re in transit.
For carrying it around there is a strap that’s built right into the frame so you can just toss it over your shoulder and bring it with you on foot and there’s even a carrying bag that helps to protect the chair when you’re not using it and when it’s in transit as well.
There is a weight capacity of 300 pounds and the back of the seat features a mesh material so it’s breathable even in hot temperatures.
As for the features, this chair comes equipped with two cup holders and an organizer that you can use to store your keys, smartphone, or anything else you want to quickly access while you’re sitting down.
The frame of the chair is made from steel and this helps to keep it durable and sturdy while you’re sitting down without having to worry about it being too flimsy.
One more thing I want to mention is that depending on your preferences there are quite a few different colors to choose from and you can go with some subdued colors or some bright wacky colors depending on what you want.
Ozark Trail Folding Camp Chair
The Ozark Trail Folding Camp Chair is a fairly basic camping chair.
It’s a suitable choice if you’re looking for something without any frills that you just want to use for sitting at the cottage or by the campfire when you’re out camping.
This chair features a steel frame and foldable design so it can be folded up and put into the included carrying bag to make it easy to transport around and toss in the trunk of your car or truck.
One of the armrests features a cup holder for quick access to anything you’re drinking and the fabric of the chairs made from a polyester material that’s sturdy and comfortable for sitting on.
Unlike some of the other more heavy-duty options here this chair has a smaller weight limit of 225 pounds and this makes it a great choice for smaller individuals and children as well.
Like I mentioned, I would recommend checking out the Ozark Trail Folding Camp Chair if you’re looking for something portable and lightweight that you can use outdoors that doesn’t come with too many extra, unwanted features.
As for the color choice, there are a few different colors to choose from depending on what it is you’re looking for.
GCI Outdoor PackSeat
If you’re looking for something lightweight to bring with you backcountry camping or you just don’t want to pile the car full of too much stuff then it’s the GCI Outdoor PackSeat that I would recommend taking a look at.
This is one of those nifty little stool chairs that are designed for using outdoors and it can be quickly folded up into a small profile that makes it portable and easy to bring with you.
Despite weighing just 26 ounces it’s able to support a weight capacity of 250 pounds and it even comes with a carrying bag to make it even easier to carry with you wherever you’re heading.
This is more like a stool rather than a dedicated camping chair and it’s a suitable choice to use if you need somewhere to sit down out in the backcountry without having to Lug around a huge heavy chair.
There’s even a carabiner that attaches to the bag so that you can clip it onto your belt buckle or backpack if you don’t feel like carrying it by hand.
As for support, it’s designed using shock cord construction legs and it comes equipped with a reinforcement panel that helps add strength to the legs and also helps to prevent them from splaying out too much when you’re sitting down.
I would definitely recommend checking out the GCI Outdoor PackSeat if you want somewhere to sit down when you’re backpacking or even if you’re car camping and you don’t want to carry around some heavy chairs.
TravelChair Slacker Camp Stool
The TravelChair Slacker Camp Stool is another one of those portable camp stools that fold up quite small and are well suited for those looking for more comfortable seating than the ground when they’re in the outdoors.
The fabric is made from 450D ripstop polyester that helps to keep it lightweight and it weighs just 1.9 pounds so if you’re looking for something to sit on when you’re out backpacking you can add this to your pack without it taking up too much space or adding too much weight.
As for the weight capacity, is able to support up to 275 pounds and the frame is made from an extra heavy tubing that’s coated in a rust resistant powder.
On the feet are some little add ons that help to keep the stool in place and prevent it from sinking in the ground when you’re sitting on it.

ALPS Mountaineering Camp Chair
The ALPS Mountaineering Camp Chair is what I would recommend taking a look at if you’re looking for a chair to use outdoors that’s comfortable, durable, and comes with a high weight capacity.
I find this chair to be pretty heavy duty and it’s made from an aluminum frame as well as steel tubes and connectors that help to keep everything in place and help it remain durable and sturdy while you’re sitting on it.
For more comfort the backrest is a little bit taller so it’s not digging into your middle back when you’re sitting on the chair and there’s a weight capacity of 425 pounds so this is even a good choice for those big guys out there that want to be comfortable sitting by the campfire.
The seat is padded and the arms are contoured rather than being straight or in a weird shape like you find with some chairs and there’s even a cup holder that you can use for any drinks that you want to quickly access while you’re sitting down.
When you’re not using it or if you need to transport it around this chair folds up right in half and at around 10.5 pounds in weight it’s definitely not the lightest one on this list but it’s not that heavy to be unmanageable either.
I find the ALPS Mountaineering Camp Chair to be a pretty suitable chair if you’re looking for something durable and if you’re a big guy like myself and you want something comfortable and sturdy to sit on by the campfire.
Quik Shade MAX Shade Camp Chair
The Quik Shade MAX Shade Camp Chair is pretty cool and I really like the fact that it comes with a shade cover that helps protect you from the Sun and even rain if you’re sitting outdoors during a downpour.
Of course I don’t recommend sitting outside when it’s raining but if you want to spend time outdoors without the sun beaming down on your face then this chair is definitely one I would recommend checking out.
As I mentioned it comes with a canopy that can be used to protect your body from the sun so that you don’t get sunburned if you’re spending an extended period of time outdoors and the canopy can be raised, lowered, and tilted depending on the sun angle and what your preferences are when it comes to the shade you want.

When it comes to portability this chair folds up and it can be placed into a carrying bag that comes with a shoulder strap so you can just sling it over your shoulder and bring it with you wherever you’re going.
It has a weight capacity of 260 pounds and depending on how short or tall you are you can actually lay back and rest your head on the back of the chair when you’re sitting in it.

Coleman Aluminum Deck Chair
The Coleman Aluminum Deck Chair is a suitable choice if you’re looking for something to use for car camping or just relaxing with at the cottage.
It actually comes with a side table that folds out from the frame that you can use for keeping snacks, your smartphone, a book, or anything else on and the table even has a dedicated drink holder built into it so you can quickly access your drink that’s kept nearby.
It’s designed from a heavy duty frame that has a weight capacity of up to 225 pounds.
For comfort this chair offers an angled sitting position and both the backrest and arms are padded.

As for the colors, there are a few different choices to choose from depending on your preferences.
Camping Chair Buyers Guide
Camp chairs, in my mind, cover just about any seating option that’s well-suited to use outdoors whether you’re car camping, using your RV, backpacking, or just spending time outside at the cottage.
Many of them can be folded up and tossed into the back of your car and even put into your backpack depending on how small and light they are.
There is quite a range of different options available and you can choose from large, comfortable ones that come with plenty of features or small, ultra portable ones that are basically just a stool that you can use so that you don’t have to sit on the ground.
It’s really up to you to decide what it is you’re looking for when it comes to the different camping chairs available and what your specific outdoor use needs are in regards to sitting down and getting comfortable.
Some other features that you want to consider or whether or not to the chair that you’re interested in comes with a carrying case or a carrying handle that makes it easier to carry around with you or if it can be packed up small enough to fit inside your backpack.
Like I mentioned, there are really just two different types of chairs to choose from.
One type is the more general use chairs that you can use for car camping, bringing with your RV anywhere, or just taking to the beach so that you have somewhere comfortable to sit down.
This type tends to be bigger, bulkier , but still not that heavy that it’s unmanageable and I find that the general use ones are much more comfortable overall.
The other type are those that are better designed for camping and backcountry use and these tend to resemble more of a stool rather than what you would assume your standard chair looks like.
These stool type hiking chairs make it much more comfortable compared to if you were to just sit on the ground and they still offer a sturdy place for you to rest out in the woods without having to lug around something too bulky and heavy.
There are quite a few different chairs available for just about every budget whether you’re looking to buy something entry-level or you want something high-end and expensive.
One thing to look at and take a look out for when you’re reading reviews is to see what the chair that you’re interested in is made from and if anybody has complained about the build quality and design of it.
I personally prefer going with options that use aluminum or steel frames because I find these to be quite durable and sturdy for when I’m sitting out by the campfire just trying to relax.
I’m also not doing too much back country camping or hiking so I don’t mind adding a few extra pounds to the back of my car so that I’m able to be comfortable at the campsite or at the beach.
I also like going with materials that are water resistant and preferably darker so they’re not going to stain as easily and I also like when there’s mesh because it helps to keep me cool when I’m sitting around on those hot summer days.
The same would go for the dedicated hiking and backcountry camping stool type chairs and if you’re interested in those I recommend keeping an eye out for solid materials as well as making sure that is not too heavy for you to carry with a backpack.
There are so many different types of chairs available these days and I always recommend just taking a look at the reviews and see what other people have to say and if they had any common problems that you might want to avoid.
Folded Size and Weight
Different chairs fold into different sizes where some of them fold completely in half and others fold into themselves into a long, narrow shape.
Again, this is an area where it’s really up to you to decide which type you want and personally I prefer the ones that fold completely in half because they take up less space in the trunk of my car and I can also stack other stuff on top of them.
The other type also aren’t so bad because the ones that fold into themselves into a narrow shape tend to come with carrying bags and this actually makes them easier to carry for when you’re headed out to the beach or somewhere to go watch fireworks or any other related outdoor activity.
The overall weight is also something to consider, especially if you’re going to be carrying the chair for long distances, and I find that the sweet spot is anywhere between 7 and 10 pounds.
Of course you’re going to want to look for something later if you’re looking to use it for backcountry camping or hiking but for just car camping and general use I don’t mind the heavier ones, especially if they come with a lot of extra features.
Extra Features and Storage
Speaking of the extra features, this is something I also keep an eye out when I’m looking at all the different models available to choose from.
I really like having a cup holder and this is a pretty standard feature for most chairs.
Extra storage areas on the chair are another feature to look for.
There are models that come with side tables where you can put on some snacks or even a meal if you’re looking for the utmost quality when it comes to features and comfort.
When it comes to the different backpacking or hiking chairs they very rarely come with any of these features and what you should look for is whether or not they come with a carrying strap or any other features that you would benefit having out in the woods.
