The GoPro is the best action camera with one tiny drawback – poor battery life!
It can be used to take awesome time lapses, capture incredible video footage at high resolutions and it’s completely waterproof so able to take it with you pretty much anywhere and still be able to use it.
The problem is, you might have noticed, its battery life isn’t that great and really the best you can expect if you’re completely careful and don’t fool around with the settings too much while you’re shooting video or capturing photos is between 1 to 2 hours of battery time.
If you have the screen on, if you’ve connected it to the remote, if you’re constantly turning it on and off or you’re capturing at a higher resolution then you’re going to notice a significant decrease in the amount of battery life you’re able to get from the camera.
Depending on the situation I’m shooting in I usually get between 1 hour and 1.5 hours of battery life before I have to switch it out.
In some cases this isn’t a problem but if I’m going to be out all day then of course I have to travel with some spare batteries just to keep capturing video and photos throughout the day.
Until GoPro comes up with a better solution and can greatly extend the battery life of their little cameras you’re going to want to consider carrying around some spare batteries as well so you never get to a point where you have no juice left and you miss that once-in-a-lifetime shot.
With some extra batteries you can use one while the rest are charging and many of the battery packs you can get come with an additional charger so you’re able to charge more than one battery at a time without having to use the camera and the USB cord for it.
With the Hero 4 you’re going to have to keep an eye out for the specific Hero 4 batteries, since none of the ones that came with the older models (Hero 3, Hero 3+) are going to work.
The new Hero 4 uses a newly designed battery and it’s a rechargeable lithium ion battery (1160mAH, 3.8V, 4,4Wh) that can be used with both the Black and Silver models.
I typically carry around three or more spare batteries with me so that I always have one available, one charging and one in the camera that I’m using at the time.
There’s really nothing wrong with going with more batteries but just keep in mind that the more you have the more you’re going to have to be careful to make sure that you’re charging the right ones and that you don’t miss out on charging any.
I’ve actually labeled all of my batteries with a number and I always charge them in a specific order so I know which of them have juice and which of them are dead at the end of the day.
In this post I want to go over the best GoPro battery options that I would recommend along with my recommendations for some aftermarket batteries, chargers and battery extenders as well.
Keep in mind that today I’m going to be talking about the GoPro Hero 4 Black and Silver camera edition and as soon as the new GoPro comes out I’ll be sure to update a new post for you guys.
The Best GoPro Battery for Your GoPro
When it comes to choosing the best spare battery for your Hero 4 camera there are two different options that I’d recommend taking a look at.
First, you have GoPro’s own proprietary batteries.
These are readily available from the GoPro website, your local electronics store and from various places online.
On the other hand, there are a variety of third-party batteries available as well.
In my experience these offer much more value and I’ve noticed that they offer about the same battery life (and in some cases more) as the official GoPro battery.
When I first got started with my first camera I always picked up the official ones but over the years I started to pick up the third party batteries because I enjoy the value that they offer and I love having all the little accessories that come with them like the extra charges and USB outlets rather than having to charge the batteries right in my GoPro.
The Official GoPro Battery and Charger
If you’re interested in going with the GoPro branded battery because you’re worried about any compatibility issues or you just want to go with a safe choice then you’re going to want to take a look at the GoPro Rechargeable Battery for Hero 4.
This is the official replacement and if you don’t feel like reading any reviews for all of the aftermarket options and you just want to go with something straightforward and simple this is what I would recommend for you to check out.
Also, if you have any problems with the battery GoPro will be there to take your customer service calls and deal with any concerns.
The GoPro Dual Battery Charger is the official charger from GoPro and it’s able to charge two of the Hero 4 batteries at the same time.
With this charging kit you get one additional spare battery and a dedicated USB cable that you can use for charging.
Keep in mind that while it might look like it in the photos you only get one additional spare battery with this kit, and you’ll be able to charge your current one and a new spare one with it at the same time.
Aftermarket Battery Recommendations
If you don’t feel like sifting through reviews or looking for some aftermarket batteries then I would just recommend going with the GoPro ones, otherwise here are my recommendations for the best batteries and chargers that aren’t GoPro branded.
The first third-party battery and charger setup that I ever started using was one from Wasabi and since then i’ve been very pleased with the value and quality of their electronic products.
There are a variety of different GoPro Hero 4 charging and battery sets that they offer.
Depending on your requirements you can go with just the two batteries, you could pick up the two batteries along with a related charger and USB cable or you can even go with the bigger kit that comes with 3 batteries depending on what you need.
There’s none I would outright recommend since it’s really up to you depending on what you’re looking for but when I was looking for a spare battery setup for the Hero 4 camera I went with the 3 pack and triple charger just so I never had to worry about battery life or charging.
Wasabi Power Battery (2-Pack)
If all you’re looking for is some spare batteries and you don’t need an additional charger then you’ll definitely want to consider going with the Wasabi Power 2-pack.
There is also a single available along with a 4 pack but I think that the 2 pack is a suitable choice, it’s what I picked up and it’s what I would recommend taking a look at.
This way, you’ll always have some spares laying around and you can enjoy a longer shooting experience with your camera without having to only deal with one single battery.
Wasabi Power Battery and Charger (2-Pack)
If you want two additional batteries along with a 2-slot cradle charger then I would recommend checking out this set up.
You’ll be able to use it to charge two batteries at the same time and it also comes with a USB cable for charging.
The Wasabi Triple Charger with 3 Batteries
If you really want to avoid running out of juice when you’re out making some GoPro videos then I would recommend taking a look at the triple charger that comes with 3 spare batteries.
This way you’ll always have a selection of different batteries available and you can also charge up to 3 at the same time so you don’t have to worry about constantly switching them out or not being able to charge them all for when you need them.
SmaTree Replacement Li-Ion Battery (2-Pack)
SmaTree is another third-party battery and charger company that I’ve had a great experience with using.
They offer a similar range of options to Wasabi and it’s really up to you to decide which of the two companies you want to go with when it comes to your batteries and chargers.
If you just need an additional two pack of batteries then it’s the SmaTree Replacement Li-Ion 2-pack that I would recommend taking a look at.
Without an additional charger you’ll have to charge these in your camera but it’s still better to have a few spare batteries rather than just having to rely on one.
SmaTree Replacement Battery 3-Pack with Charger
If you’re looking for a few extra spare batteries and you want a charger to go along with it then I would recommend considering the SmaTree Replacement Battery 3-Pack with Charger.
It comes with three spare batteries and all related charger that will charge all 3 at the same time through USB.
SmaTree Replacement Battery (2-Pack) with Charger (3-Channel, Wall, Car) and European Plug
If you’re going to be spending some time abroad in Europe then it’s the SmaTree Replacement Battery (2-Pack) with Charger (3-Channel, Wall, Car) and European Plug that I would recommend for you to check out.
This kit comes with a 3 channel charger, 2 additional batteries and a variety of accessories that are great for people traveling throughout Europe.
There is a European plug, a dedicated wall charger so that you can charge everything without having to find a suitable USB adapter and there’s even a car charger so you’re able to keep everything charged on-the-go.
The GoPro Hero 4 Black and Silver Both have been designed to be used with an extended battery.
The way that these extended batteries work is that they plug directly into the back of your camera and give a huge boost to your battery life.
The drawback with them is that they definitely add a little bit of additional weight and they make the camera setup a bit more bulky so you can’t use the included housing and you’ll have to pick up an extended back door if you want to keep the GoPro in its case.
Keep in mind that if you’re using the Silver edition you’ll still be able to use an extended battery but it’s going to cover the LCD screen.
Here are some of the different extended batteries available that I would recommend for you to take a look at.
GoPro Battery BacPac
The GoPro Battery BacPac is the official extended battery from GoPro.
It attaches directly to the back of the camera and it even comes with its own housing that you can use to attach to the standard housing for additional protection.
It shows you a small LCD window that’ll let you know the current battery level or how far along with charging it is and there’s even an LED light that lets you know when it’s recording.
For charging, you can charge this extended battery with any USB charger or you could always opt to use GoPro’s own wall charger.
Wasabi Extended Battery
The Wasabi Extended Battery is another option that you have if you want to extend the battery life of your GoPro.
It works the same way, simply attach it to the back of your camera and you’ll be able to enjoy some extended battery life.
With just the basic extended battery it comes with a USB charging cable along with a protective case as well and if you want some more protection for your camera I would recommend taking a look at the option that comes with all of the different backdoors for the standard housing.
