Despite spending most of my time traveling I still use a laptop stand these days for better ergonomics and for a more comfortable position when I’m working on my travel blog.
Keeping your laptop screen elevated and also using a dedicated mouse and keyboard goes a long way in prevent carpal tunnel, shoulder pain, neck pain, and other problems that people spending too much time hunched over a laptop might experience.
These days there are quite a few different stands to choose from and you can find ones that are better designed for permanent use as well as portable ones that you can use when you’re traveling.
I recommend keeping an eye out for any of the different models that allow you to adjust the position of your laptop screen as well as those that can hold up a wider range of laptops depending on what you might be using.
Today, I want to share with you some of my different recommendations for the best laptop stand that you can use at home, at the office, or if you’re traveling between different destinations and you still need to get some work done on your laptop.
The only reason I started looking at these different stands is because I was getting some problems in my neck as well as my fingers so I began trying out different techniques that I could use before more ergonomic working position.
I started out using a dedicated keyboard along with an ergonomic mouse and it wasn’t that long before I went and picked up the laptop stand to use to keep the screen in a better placement so that I wasn’t craning my neck or hunching over the laptop.
After trying out a bunch of different models, I eventually settled on two and I have one that I keep at my home office and one that I bring with me traveling.
However, there are quite a few different reliable models to choose from and in this post I want to share with you some of my different recommendations so you can see what’s available and hopefully find one that’s going to be well suited for your own personal needs.
The Best Laptop Computer Stand
The Roost is what I eventually stumbled onto when I was on the hunt for the best travel laptop stand.
It features a lightweight, folding design so it’s well suited for traveling with and even when it’s holding a laptop the stand itself is quite sturdy on a flat surface.
The height of it can be adjustable so you can adjust the height of your screen from between 6-inches up to 12-inches of lift and this means you can use it at a regular desk or even at a standing desk depending on where you’re getting your work done.
When you’re not using it, it’s possible to fold up the Roost where it will fit easily into your laptop bag or backpack. This stand comes with a nylon carrying sleeve for better organization and to help protect it when it’s packed away.
Setting it up this simple, simply unfolded and position it in your preferred position and you just need to slide your laptop into the holding area where it will remain until you take it down.
This is definitely a great option if you’re using a Macbook laptop and it can also be used for any laptops that are 0.75-inches thick or less.
Along with this stand I would also recommend using a ergonomic keyboard and mouse so that you can take the best advantage of an ideal workplace set up using your laptop.
Rain Design mStand
The Rain Design mStand is another one of the recommendations, especially if you’re looking for a Macbook laptop stand.
Of course this model can be used with other laptops but it takes on the aluminum silver design just like the MacBooks and it boasts a very sturdy and durable construction.
Unfortunately, it’s not adjustable but it does offer a lift of 5.9-inches so it definitely helps when it comes to getting your laptop up off the desk and into a more ergonomic position for extended use.
This isn’t really something you can travel with, it’s meant more to be used in a fixed position, and it’s designed from a single piece of aluminum that helps to keep it stable and sturdy when your laptop is mounted.
The aluminum panel design also acts as a heat sink help keep your device cool while you’re using it and there’s even a cable organizer that you can use to keep your cables behind it and out of sight.
Underneath there’s a large space that you can stash your keyboard to free up some more room on the desk and it’s compatible with a wide range of different laptops as long as they have a depth of less than 10.4-inches.
This would make a great addition to your home office and workplace setting if you’re looking to take advantage of a more ergonomic working setup where your laptop screen and elevated and you can also use a dedicated mouse and keyboard.
Readaeer Adjustable Desk Table
The Readaeer Adjustable Desk Table is really neat because it offers quite a few different ways that you can adjust it to find the ideal screen placement for you.
Not only that, but it comes with a mouse holder so that you can use this stand as a standing desk or even use it in bed so that you can still have a sturdy surface when you’re in bed or on the couch.
It’s quite big actually, capable of holding laptops up to 17 inches in size, and even though it’s pretty big it can be folded down into a streamlined and portable shape so that you can bring it with you depending on where you’re going.
It’s not as portable as the Roost, weighing about 3.6-pounds, and you’re going to need a suitcase or large duffel bag if you want to carry it around with you along with your other electronic gear and supplies.
The top part of the stand itself is made from iron, so it’s very durable and sturdy, and the legs are made of plastic.
To make adjustments, the legs come with automatically locking joints and you can twist them in a rotation of 360 degrees depending on how you want to set the stand up.
It does take a little bit of playing with to find an ideal position for the Readaeer Adjustable Desk Table to hold your laptop upright properly but once you get used to it it’s very easy to adjust and a very high quality laptop stand as well.
Griffin Technology Elevator
The Griffin Technology Elevator can be used to elevate your laptop 5.5-inches above the desk, putting it into a better ergonomic position for you, and freeing up some space on the desktop itself so that you can use a keyboard and a mouse for a better overall set up.
This stand is made from brushed aluminum and plastic, so it’s very lightweight while still being a sturdy enough to hold a wide range of different laptops.
The minimal design along with the space underneath allows for your laptop to take advantage of a lot more air circulation compared to if it was just sitting on the desk and this really helps it to stay cool, especially during those warmer summer months when electronics tend to overheat.
Along of the arms there is a grip to help keep your laptop and place but you’re going to want to be careful not to bump it or it could accidentally fall off the stand onto the desk if you’re not careful.
This is a very minimal device and you can take it apart if you want to make it more portable depending on where you want to bring it.
The Benefits of Using a Laptop Stand
There are quite a few laptop stand benefits that you’re able to take advantage of when you’re using one, especially when it comes to posture and general ergonomics.
Without a stand, whenever you’re using your laptop it’s very likely that you’re going to be hunched over the small keyboard with your neck at an awkward angle trying to look at the screen.
This small keyboard means that your hands and shoulders are going to be drawn inwards and all of this is putting a lot of pressure on your upper back, neck, and wrists.
This is not good at all for your general posture and workplace ergonomics and this position can have a detrimental impact on your health given a long enough period of time.
Originally, the laptop wasn’t designed to be used permanently and instead you were supposed to use a dedicated computer along with a proper monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
Of course, a lot easier to travel around with a laptop or use one at home because it’s a lot more portable and these days especially they are a lot more reasonably priced.
As I mentioned, there are definitely some injuries that you can suffer from long-term laptop use and you’re even more susceptible to these problems if you’re not taking advantage of good posture and positioning.
Using a stand that elevates the laptop above the desk into a better viewing angle while at the same time using an external keyboard and mouse really helps to promote a better posture and will definitely make you more comfortable when you’re working at the laptop for extended periods of time.
Despite being really convenient, there are definitely quite a few problems that you might experience if you’re not taking advantage of good ergonomics when you’re using a laptop device.
Some of the issues that you might experience include:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Neck pain and upper back pain
- Lower back pain if you’re not using proper seating
- Computer vision syndrome
- Headaches and eye problems
Once you start suffering from any of these issues they can continue to have a further impact on such things as:
- How productive you are
- Increased levels of discomfort even when doing other things away from the laptop
- Other injuries related to poor posture and bad ergonomics
- Loss of payment from having to take time off work to visit the doctor or spend time healing
Using a laptop stand makes it so that you can elevate your laptop screen to an optimal eye level that’s the ideal distance away from you when you’re sitting at the desk and getting some work done.
Not only does it help with ergonomics, especially in conjunction with a dedicated mouse and keyboard, but stands can also help to keep your laptop cooler while you’re using it and also generally organize your workspace.
I would definitely suggest taking a look at the different models available to find one that’s best suitable for your current needs as well as considering picking up an ergonomic mouse and an ergonomic keyboard for better overall posture and ergonomics when you are using your laptop.
