I was fortunate enough to spend a night in Hallstatt and I couldn’t have picked a better place to stay than the Hotel Grüner Baum.
Although I was only able to spend less than 24 hours in Hallstatt the Hotel Grüner Baum was the best base to have to explore the city and check out everything that the charming small town had to offer.
Before I go into more details about my stay here is a little bit of history and practical info about the Hotel Grüner Baum.
The Hotel Grüner Baum
The property that the hotel is situated in is quite a historic property and it was first mentioned all the way back and 1700.
Today, it’s located in the very city center of Hallstatt and while the hotel gives off more of a historic vibe it comes equipped with all of the modern conveniences you could hope for.
There are thirty different rooms at the hotel and there is a popular restaurant on-site, the Zum Salzbaron, where you can choose from a variety of dishes with the local specialty being freshly caught fish that were pulled out of the lake right beside the hotel.
Depending on your preferences and budget you can choose from either a double room, double room with a balcony, suite or even a single room if you’re traveling by yourself.
For reference, the Hotel Grüner Baum is a 4-star hotel.
Now that you know a little bit more about this charming accommodation in Hallstatt let’s take a look at my review.
A Charming Stay in Hallstatt: My Review of the Hotel Grüner Baum
The check-in process at the Hotel Grüner Baum is about the most streamlined and simple that you could ask for.
Immediately upon walking into the hotel there is a large reception area on the right and any time that I walked by the reception room there were two friendly, helpful and attentive receptionists ready to help with anything that I could need.
Check in was quite quick and not even 5 minutes after walking through the door I was armed with the key to my room, a map and all of the information I needed on the different things to do in Hallstatt.
The young man helping me even made some suggestions in regards to some of the best restaurants nearby and when I saw him again the next morning he was very friendly and made an effort to make sure that I was happy with my stay at the hotel.
The Interior of the Hotel
After checking in I made my way up to my room, but not before I looked around a bit.
Although the Hotel Grüner Baum takes on more of a classic, traditional appearance it’s easy to see that a lot of effort has been put in to making the hotel look the best that it can.
The restaurant was surprisingly modern and offered incredible views over the lake and while walking throughout the hotel I noticed that everything was clean, updated and thoughtfully designed.
The elevator reaches all the floors except for the top one so you’ll have to take the stairs if you’re on the highest floor but that’s not a problem since you’ll be closest to the spa and will be able to take advantage of all of the amenities that it has to offer quite easily.
Right after opening the door to my room and stepping into the living space the first thing I noticed was the window that offered an incredible view out over Lake Hallstatt.
Since it was a bit warm outside I opened the window to let in the cool breeze blowing off the lake and it was nice to be able to enjoy some fresh air after a long drive.
After admiring the view for quite a while I started looking around the room and taking a look at everything.
For a traditional hotel I found the room to be quite spacious and apart from a large bed there was also a pair of comfortable seating options, a desk, a large wardrobe and a spacious bathroom as well.
I could definitely see the throwback to classical/traditional Austrian style but nothing felt outdated and there were some modern features, like a Dyson bladeless fan, that gave it a nice updated touch.
Obviously, one of the first things I did when I got into the room after looking at the window was jump onto the bed to test its comfort and durability.
I’ll be honest, it was almost impossible for me to get up and the bed was so comfortable I simply wanted to take a nap and sleep away the rest of the day.
As is quite common in Europe there were two different covers provided, one for each person, and there were two different pillows as well so I was able to choose a specific one depending on the particular size that I wanted.
When it came to falling asleep I didn’t have any troubles and I found the mattress to be the perfect amount of firmness, just what I was looking for.
A huge bonus is that I could even see some of the mountain from the bed so I was not only able to rest comfortably but I could also enjoy the view.
The Wi-Fi worked fairly well at the hotel and I didn’t have any problems with connecting, browsing the internet or uploading photos.
Instagram worked without any issues at all and I was able to watch YouTube videos without any buffering or lag.
It’s important having a strong, fast and reliable internet connection when you’re traveling so you’re able to keep in touch with your friends and family back home as well as be able to share any of the photos or videos that you’ve made.
In that case, Hotel Grüner Baum receives a perfect rating and you don’t have to worry about any internet issues during your stay.
Where the bedroom and sleeping area is classic and traditional the bathroom is completely the opposite.
The bathroom at the Hotel Grüner Baum was modern, updated and came with any of the amenities you would need to use if you had forgotten anything or simply don’t travel with your own.
Apart from your standard sink configuration there’s also a bathtub where there is a stand-up shower that’s possible to use as well. This way you can choose to have either a bath or a shower depending on what you’re looking to do.
There is a comfortable leather chair in the bathroom but I’m not sure why it’s there. It’s probably good to use if you’re having to bathe your kids or if you just want to sit down to brush your teeth.
One of the highlights of the bathroom at the hotel was the selection of amenities that are provided.
The amenities include:
- Soap bar
- Sewing kit
- Shower cap
- Vanity kit
There is even a selection of body soap, shampoo and condition that you can use for cleaning.
There wasn’t any window in the bathroom but it was large, spacious and definitely had enough room for two people to be able to use it to get ready at the same time.
I checked the price for a single night during the week in September 2016 and prices start around $235 per night depending on the room you choose.
One thing to keep in mind is that the Hotel Grüner Baum is a very popular place so you can expect the rooms to become booked quite quickly and if you’re planning on visiting Hallstatt I would recommend making your booking as soon as you can to avoid any issues.
As with any hotel one of the most important things to look for is the location and the Hotel Grüner Baum definitely doesn’t disappoint in this regard.
The hotel is located right in the very center of Hallstatt and it dominates one entire end of the old town square.
Not only does it have a prime position in the center of Hallstatt but it’s also conveniently located right on the edge of Lake Hallstatt so it doesn’t matter if you want to walk around on foot and explore or head out onto the water to check out the lake, you’re in the best location to do whatever you like.
Nearby to the hotel are a variety of different restaurants, cafes and all of the main attractions are within walking distance.
There’s even a small grocery store right beside the hotel that you can visit if you want to get some quick snacks or something to drink.
There are few hotels in Hallstatt that offer guests a better location than the Hotel Grüner Baum.
The breakfast at the Hotel Grüner Baum was one of the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying at a hotel.
I’ve had incredible breakfasts at the Melia Berlin and at the Dreams Tulum Resort and Spa but even those memorable early morning meals can’t compare to what was offered at Hotel Grüner Baum.
Apart from a wide selection of breakfast items and impeccable service the best part about it was being able to enjoy my meal right on the shore of Lake Hallstatt and breath in the fresh summer air with a view of the lake and surrounding mountains.
The selection was quite large with a range of different options depending on what you were interested in having for breakfast.
There was even a small selection of items dedicated to the Asian tourists that frequent the hotel.
I was able to choose from a variety of hot food options, cereals, sliced meats and cheeses, fresh fruit, nuts, dried fruit and there were some drinks and fresh water available as well.
After being seated one of the many waiters approach to the table and double check to see if everything was alright and asked if I wanted any tea or coffee.
There is a selection of teas available and hot coffee drinks to choose from depending on what your preferences are.
Overall, the breakfast that the Hotel Grüner Baum was one of the highlights of my visit and if you’re staying in the hotel I definitely recommend waking up early to take advantage of the generous breakfast buffet.
If you’re fortunate enough to be visiting Hallstatt when the weather is nice be sure to head outside and enjoy your meal on the outdoor patio with an incredible view.
Driving in the city center of Hallstatt is very difficult because of the large crowds and narrow roads and it’s also not allowed for just anybody.
Any visitors to the hotel will have to park in one of the parking lots located at the edge of town but if you’re staying at the hotel there’s a free shuttle included with the rate.
Parking was reasonably priced and the shuttle runs about every 30 minutes so you never have to wait too long to reach the hotel or your car depending on where you’re going.
For any guests staying overnight there was underground parking available at the lot which is great if you’re worried about the safety and security of your car.
I didn’t experience any issues with having to figure out parking and the shuttle driver was very helpful in making sure I got to the hotel quickly and efficiently.
To pay for parking you simply bring your ticket to the kiosk once you’re ready to leave and your ticket will be marked so that the gate will open when you slide your paid ticket into the machine.
The Hotel Grüner Baum Is what I believe to be one of the best places to stay in Hallstatt.
Its location is amazing, the breakfast and on-site restaurant serve great food with even better service and the prices are quite reasonable for such an incredible hotel.
Overall, if you want your visit to Hallstatt to be one that you never forget I would definitely recommend spending your time exploring the city from the comfort of your room at the Hotel Grüner Baum.
