During my road trip across France I spent two nights at the lovely Hotel Les Grillons in Talloires, France.
Originally I was looking for somewhere in the city center of Annecy to explore the region from though having spent so much time in big cities and popular areas I thought that anywhere a bit more laid back and relaxing would be a better choice.
The Hotel Des Grillons was just that – a small oasis with an ideal location on Lake Annecy.
Not only was I able to use the hotel as a base for exploring but it also offered plenty of opportunities for swimming, both on-site and in the nearby lake, and there was even dinner included so I was even further able to enjoy my stay without having to worry about dining options.
With large, bright and spacious rooms and beautiful grounds the Hotel Les Grillons is the perfect place if you’re looking to escape city life and just spend a few moments soaking up the sun and relaxing without any worries.
All of the staff from the concierge to the dining wait staff were very friendly, helpful, well-trained and seemingly tried their hardest to make sure everything was going smoothly.
Even the owner of the hotel, Aurelie, turned out to be one of the friendliest people I’ve met on my travels and I would even head back just for another chance to speak with her again.
In this post I want to share my experience at the hotel and offer a detailed look at what can be expected if you’re planning on staying at one of the best hotels/resorts on Lake Annecy in France.
The Hotel Les Grillon in Talloires
Before I get into my review I want to share a little bit of history and general information about the hotel itself.
The Hotel Les Grillon is located a short walk away from the shores of Lake Annecy and is more of a resort rather than a standard hotel.
There’s a large pool that can be enjoyed during those warm summer days, sprawling grounds for strolling and exploring, a ping-pong table to keep your kids entertained, 32 different rooms depending on your accommodation preferences, the option to have breakfast or half-board and so much more!
It’s the perfect place for a weekend getaway!
As for the history of the hotel, it was built by the grandfather of current owner, Aurelie, and has been continuously expanded and renovated over the years.
It’s currently only open during the warmer summer months but during the winter months are when repairs and renovations happen and it can even be booked for weddings or any other personal events.
The location makes it a great choice for exploring the region and learning more about the best that Annecy and Savoie itself has to offer.
Now that you know a little bit more about the hotel let’s take a look at my review and experience staying here.
My Hotel Les Grillons Review
Check-In and Interior
Upon check-in I was greeted by Aurelie, the current owner of the hotel, and she happily welcomed my girlfriend and I.
We spoke a bit about our journey so far and after giving me some details she handed me the key and off I went to the room.
Along the way I couldn’t help but notice how bright, spacious and airy everything seemed.
The restaurant, lounge and bar area were quite big and the windows offered a great view of the grounds and of the lake off in the distance.
Thanks to the large windows plenty of natural light was being let in so it didn’t feel stuffy or cramped at all, quite the opposite actually.
As I made my way to my room I noticed more of a traditional vibe throughout the hallways and I assumed this is more geared towards the older guests and families that visit.
However, with some small changes to a more modern and contemporary design the hotel could definitely improve their chances in attracting younger vacationers looking for somewhere trendy to spend a few days.
Right after opening the door to my room I noticed immediately how large and spacious it was.
The family suite was the only available room leftover for me and I was very happy with the amount of space I had to relax and enjoy my stay in.
I noticed a balcony at the end of the bedroom so I ran over, threw open the doors and couldn’t believe my eyes.
From my corner room I had an incredible view over Lake Annecy and of the mountain range off in the distance.
The view from the room was unbelievable and there were even two chairs on the balcony so I was able to sit down for a moment and just take it all in.
If it wasn’t for wanting to explore the surrounding area and spend time swimming in the lake I probably would have sat on the balcony for my entire trip just soaking up the sun and admiring the view.
Finally after sitting on the balcony for a while I checked out the rest of the hotel room to see what else it had tucked away.
There were two bedrooms, one main bedroom and a smaller one for children or additional guests.
In the main bedroom was a comfortable seat and a large desk that made for a suitable workspace but there was also another small desk in the secondary bedroom as well.
The bathroom was quite nice, maybe a bit stuffy because there weren’t any windows in it, but none the less it worked quite well and I really appreciated the separate, private toilet room.
The two bedrooms had large windows in them and were naturally well-lit so there weren’t any problems with lighting or fresh air in the rest of the room.
There was plenty of storage space available and even though there wasn’t any air conditioning the large windows let in a pleasant breeze and the room stayed quite cool despite the warm weather outside.
One more thing I want to mention is that the wood paneling and dark red carpet gave the room more of a vintage and traditional vibe which only helped to make it even more relaxing.
I was looking online and some of the other bedrooms are actually quite updated and modern so if you’re interested in booking be sure to send an email or call in advance and let the hotel know what your room style preferences are.
I only had a chance to try out the large bed in the main bedroom and overall I found it quite comfortable.
There weren’t too many pillows taking up any wasted space and the blanket was very light so even during the warm nights I was never overheating or becoming too warm.
One of the best features is that from the bed I could see directly out of the window and when I was laying down I had an incredible view of the mountains across the lake.
I’ll be honest, I spent a lot of time laying there just staring out the window daydreaming and this turned out to be one of the best aspects of the room.
One of the only problems I had during my stay at the hotel was the poor Wi-Fi connection and although the connection itself was quite reliable the speeds were very slow.
Again, for many people having a quick internet connection isn’t that big of a deal, especially for the visitors of the hotel looking to relax, but for a travel blogger like me it was pretty brutal not being able to enjoy the internet speeds that I was accustomed to throughout the rest of Europe.
These days many people are looking to stay online even when they’re on vacation just to keep in touch with friends and family back home and to interact with social media so I think this is another area where the hotel could definitely improve.
I wasn’t able to upload any videos at all, I could barely upload photos and even basic web browsing was quite slow so overall I was not very happy with the internet provided at the hotel.
It might have been slow because of the location of my room at the far end of the building but generally the speed was not at all suitable.
Keep in mind that if you’re on vacation and you don’t want to worry about anything back home then this shouldn’t be a problem for you.
As I already mentioned the bathroom was a bit stuffy since there wasn’t any windows or a working fan inside although overall everything else worked the way it was supposed to and the bathroom itself was quite spacious and roomy.
An interesting feature was that the toilet was in a room separate from the actual bathroom and this is great because it offers more privacy while allowing 2 guests to use the bathroom facilities for the toilet or cleaning up at the same time.
In the bathroom were some basic amenities like shampoo and soap and there are also some
Instead of a dedicated stand up shower there was a bathtub/shower combination so it’s possible to either have a regular shower or even take a bath depending on your preferences.
Generally, the bathroom was quite basic and just what’s expected when you’re on vacation without having any fancy features or too many amenities to worry about.
I checked the price for a double room with a lake view balcony for random dates in September and if you’re planning on staying at this hotel you can expect to pay about $186 USD total.
This price actually includes half board, so breakfast and dinner are included, and considering the area and location this is quite a good value for a hotel during the high season of summer travel on Lake Annecy.
Unfortunately, none of the rooms are available during the winter as the hotel is closed and if you’re interested in staying during the summer I would recommend booking as far in advance as possible as it’s quite a popular place.
The location of the Hotel Les Grillons is one of the best aspects of the hotel.
It’s located just a short walk away from the shores of Lake Annecy and it’s within driving distance of the city of Annecy itself along with a variety of other beaches and quaint small French towns.
Also within a short driving distance of less than 15 minutes are plenty of different restaurants, small shops and cafés where you can spend time relaxing during the day.
There are even a series of hiking trails nearby so if you’re looking for some exercise or you want to discover even better views of Lake Annecy then the location is ideal for you.
As for public transportation, I’m not sure if the area is very well serviced by bus and I would recommend driving for the best chance to explore the region.
Breakfast and Dinner (Half Board)
As I mentioned up above many of the prices include half board so breakfast and dinner is available at the hotel and you don’t have to venture out on your own looking for somewhere to eat.
The breakfast was typical to what you’ll find at many Western European hotels.
There was a selection of sliced meats and cheese available, some different breads, pastries, pancakes and you could even make a hard boiled egg.
Coffee, tea, juice and water was also available but there weren’t any specialty hot coffee drinks that could be made.
Dinner was another one of the highlights of my stay at the hotel and each night there was a fixed menu with locally inspired and high quality menu items.
It was more of a fancier affair and overall the dinner really helped to enhance my experience at the hotel and it’s one of the more unique aspects that you can take advantage of when you’re staying here.
For example, one of the fixed menus included:
- Chorizo, fresh cheese and Courgette muffin with a tomato cappuccino
- Chicken fillet with a light shallot and black pepper sauce with mashed potatoes
- A cheese plate with a selection of local cheeses
- Raspberry coconut tart with a raspberry coulis
So from these options available you can see that there is a suitable selection of dinner items and it’s all of the utmost quality.
I found the entire meal to be quite delicious, everything was cooked perfectly and it was one of the best meals I’ve had in all of France.
Apart from the taste, the service was also world class and the waiter we had tried his hardest to make sure that our needs were met and that we were happy with everything we were served.
Parking and Accessibility
At the hotel is a large parking lot set about one hundred meters away from the main road that runs through the region.
The parking was very secure and there were plenty of spots available so there was no need to worry about finding somewhere to park or wondering if there would be any spots left at the end of the day.
As for accessibility, like I mentioned up above I’m not sure if it’s possible to reach the hotel by public transportation and I would actually recommend against doing that as you wouldn’t be able to explore that many other places nearby without a car.
I would definitely recommend staying at the Hotel Des Grillons if you’re planning on visiting the Savoie region and you want easy access to Lake Annecy and the city of Annecy itself.
Apart from that the beach and plenty of lake access points are a short walk or drive away and it’s the ideal location to be if you want to enjoy a comfortable vacation while having plenty of opportunities for swimming, hiking and exploring the small towns nearby.
I enjoyed my stay at the hotel quite a bit and it was only made better by the half board meal options, location, pool and spacious, airy room.
Anyone heading to Annecy or the Savoie region should definitely consider staying at the Hotel Les Grillons – you’re bound to have an enjoyable experience!
