During my trip to Switzerland I spent one night at the beautiful Hotel Wilden Mann in Lucerne.
First mentioned in 1517, the Wilden Mann is one of the most historic properties in the city. Since 1726 it has been operating as a licensed tavern and today occupies a series of 7 buildings surrounding the original hotel.
Those of you looking for something traditional and elegant are going to find this hotel an ideal place to spend the night. Wandering through the halls it’s easy to imagine yourself add a different period in history while still enjoying modern amenities and luxury comforts.
In this post I want to share my personal review of the Hotel Wilden Mann and give you guys a better look at the experience that I had during my stay. This way you’ll have a better idea of what to expect if you’re planning to stay here yourselves.
To save you the trouble, yes I would definitely recommend staying at this hotel if you’re visiting Lucerne and looking for somewhere upscale and traditional.
Let’s jump into the review!
The Hotel Wilden Mann in Lucerne [Review]
Check-In and Interior
The check-in process at the Wilden Mann was straightforward and quick. There was no milling about and the young receptionist checked us in immediately.
Despite arriving a few hours early the room was ready. The receptionist offered to give us a tour before showing us to the room – we accepted.
The lobby is spacious and features a traditional design layout. It’s similar to the rest of the hotel with its wooden antique furniture highlights and classic design elements.
One thing I really loved was the cold, homemade iced tea sitting in the lobby for guests. This was a great addition, especially considering our August travel dates were hotter than usual.
The exterior of the hotel is designed in a Belle-Epoque architectural style. This blends nicely with the surrounding architecture and gives the property a romantic and charming setting.
On the way to the room I couldn’t help notice more of the traditional design details. When you’re walking through the hotel it’s easy to see where all of the different buildings were joined together to make this one large sprawling property.
Keep an eye out for the slanted floors and mismatched ceilings to see where the different buildings were aligned!
It’s clear that the Wilden Mann strives to represent itself as a classical hotel. This is evident with the antique furniture, historic paintings, and carved wood details found throughout the property and in the rooms.
I was surprised right away by the size of the room right as I opened the door.
I’ll be honest, I expected both a traditional bedroom along with bathroom (which in many hotels means outdated) but this simply wasn’t the case at the Wilden Mann.
Sure, the bedroom did in fact take on more of an aged and classic look but the bathroom was surprisingly very modern, bright and spacious.
The room itself was quite bright as well and one of the walls was dominated by a huge window that offered a view of the street down below and sticking my head out I could see the river and old city walls off in the distance.
The appearance did not detract from the fact that the furnishings and bed were of high quality and there was more than enough space in the room for two people.
Thanks to the window the room was bright and there were a variety of different lights available around the room as well.
There was a small table, a dedicated work space and a wardrobe for luggage and clothes storage.
Overall, I was quite impressed with the room and I think when it’s time for it to get updated it will turn into an even more impressive and memorable living space.
After traveling for so long I always look forward to being able to take advantage of a firm and comfortable bed.
Thankfully, this was the case at the Wilden Mann.
The bed was very comfortable, firm and the mattress wasn’t too soft, dimpled or too springy.
The pillows were also the right firmness for me and the bed was huge so I was able to move around freely and I didn’t feel cramped at all throughout the night.
Thanks to the natural lighting coming in the room I was able to wake up early without having to use my alarm but I also noticed that there were darker curtains that could be used for a darker room depending on what your preferences are.
Having fast and reliable internet is important to me and I think a lot of travelers benefit from being able to use quick wifi with a strong signal.
I was a bit worried at first since I wasn’t sure if the hotel had a lot of younger guests visiting and I assumed they didn’t put too much effort into their internet.
However, my assumptions were wrong and the internet at the Wilden Mann Hotel was blazing fast.
Overall, I was very happy with the signal strength and speed of the wifi at the hotel.
I was not only able to browse the web and use social media but I could even upload edited photos and videos as well without any issues, something that is quite rare these days even at higher-end hotels like this one.
No complaints on my end in regards to the reliability and speed of the internet and thanks to the dedicated desk/work space I was even able to get caught up on a little bit of work during my stay.
I’ll be honest, the bathroom was the highlight of the room to me and the biggest surprise of the hotel.
During my tour I was able to see a few other rooms, all of which also had modern and recently updated bathrooms, and this is a huge selling point and bonus to me when it comes to traditional places to stay.
The bathroom itself was spacious and bright with two sinks and there was the possibility to have either a bath or shower.
It was very clean and I didn’t notice any built up dust or dirt in the corners – nothing seemed to be outdated or in any need of repair.
Towels were provided and there were even a small collection of nice smelling amenities from the Romantik Hotel Collection (body lotion, shampoo, shower gel, etc).
I loved the dark flooring and the bright lighting made it seem even bigger overall.
The provided towels were soft, not scratchy, and didn’t have any weird chemical smells from being washed and I could tell they were pretty high quality by how they felt in my hands.
There was even a small note left by the lady who had cleaned the bathroom and it’s that personal touch that is one of reasons that makes the Wilden Mann Hotel such a personable and great place to stay.
I checked the price for the hotel on HotelsCombined and for a random night in November prices for a room start as low as $211 USD for a double room and range in price up to $274 USD for a larger double room with breakfast included.
This is about what you can expect to pay for two people and keep in mind that the price can vary depending on the time of year you’re traveling and how far in advance you book your room.
For Lucerne I would say that this price is quite reasonable when it comes to the higher-end and more highly rated hotels in the city.
One of my favorite parts about the Hotel Wilden Mann was its perfect location.
As soon as I walked out of the front door I was able to reach all of the main popular tourist sights in under 10-minutes on foot and there was plenty of access to public transportation options or taxis as well.
Nearby to the hotel are plenty of different restaurants, bars and cafes (although I actually recommend eating at the hotel restaurant so you don’t have to venture too far at all for that).
I found the location of the hotel to be well-suited for exploring Lucerne on foot and if you’re looking for somewhere to stay where you’re able to quickly head back to the room to relax before heading out to explore again then I would definitely recommend this hotel for that reason.
Breakfast and On Site Restaurant
Another area that I was surprised with in this hotel was the breakfast.
It’s actually not that common to find good hotel breakfasts in Europe apart from a basic selection of bread and some cold meats/cheese platters.
The Wilden Mann on the other hand totally surprised me with the amount of options available and the quality of the breakfast service overall.
Also, one thing I want to mention is that one of the best cappuccino’s I ever had in Europe was at this hotel so if you’re into hot coffee drinks then you definitely won’t be let down.
Available for breakfast was a wide selection of breads, pastries, fruits, yogurt, cereal, juice, tea and even some hot options.
I was able to enjoy a wonderful spread and I was very pleased with the hotel breakfast overall.
Apart from breakfast there is also a popular restaurant on-site.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to experience it but I checked the menu and there is a selection of traditional Swiss items to choose from.
The restaurant itself is also classically designed and takes on more of a rustic appearance, obviously paying homage to the design of the rest of the hotel and giving a nod to its rich history.
For more information I suggest taking a look at the restaurant website.
Parking and Accessibility
Should you happen to be driving into Lucerne then you’re in luck when it comes to parking at the hotel.
While there isn’t parking on-site there is a large parking garage less than 5-minutes away from the front doors.
Pricing is reasonable at around 20 Swiss Francs for a day of parking and it’s so close that rolling your suitcase down the street would hardly be a problem.
As for accessibility, well the hotel is in a great location and there are a series of tram and bus stops a short walk away as well.
From the train station it’s a 20-minute walk or 5-minute taxi ride.
There are hardly any other hotels that I’d personally recommend staying at other than the Hotel Wilden Mann.
While on the outside it takes on a more traditional and classical appearance don’t let this fool you.
Everyone is of the utmost quality from the bedding and bathroom amenities to the food and hotel wait staff service.
The location is impeccable and for the price you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better hotel in the city center.
I enjoyed my stay at the Wilden Mann very much and it was definitely one of the highlights of my visit to Lucerne.
During my time I didn’t experience any issues at all and I’m sure you won’t have any problems either.
It doesn’t matter if it’s your first time visiting Lucerne or if you’re back to explore the city again for the third time, I personally recommend checking out the Hotel Wilden Mann if you’re looking for a comfortable and traditional accommodation and a great place to check out the city from.
