It’s not often that I have a completely bad experience staying at a hotel but unfortunately it was the Landgasthof Lindenhof Hotel near Neuschwanstein where I ran into my first bad hotel stay during my three-month road trip.
This was actually very surprising to me considering I had such an overall positive time visiting a variety of different hotels in Germany and I wanted to share my honest experience at this hotel to that other travellers know what they can expect when visiting the Landgasthof Lindenhof Hotel.
Keep in mind that the hotel is very highly rated online and it seems that a lot of people do in fact have a very positive experience visiting here so I thinking back it’s very unusual that I didn’t have a good time at all and actually wouldn’t personally recommend staying here.
However, before I dive into my experience let’s take a quick look at some of the details of the hotel itself.
The Landgasthof Lindenhof Hotel
The Landgasthof Lindenhof Hotel is located in an ideal location for anyone looking to visit Neuschwanstein Castle and check out the surrounding area.
Accommodation near the castle itself is very expensive so if you’re driving then this hotel is it suitable choice where you can relax and spend the night before making your way to the castle and surrounding cities.
It’s located right beside the highway so it’s not that hard to find and there are plenty of restaurants nearby.
There about 11 rooms at the hotel so it’s a more personal place to stay and during a visit you’re not going to run into many other people.
Many of the rooms are equipped with a terrace that offers a view over the parking lot or of the countryside behind the hotel and if you’re traveling with children to love the horse farm and the other small farm animals that you can find at this location as well.
There’s a restaurant on site although when I visited they weren’t serving anything for dinner at all and in the same restaurant is where breakfast is served in the morning.
With some of the details out of the way let’s take a look at my review and experience staying at this hotel.
My Landgasthof Lindenhof Hotel Review
Check-In and Interior
When I arrived at the hotel it was pouring rain so I dropped my girlfriend off so that she could check in while I parked the car and brought in the luggage.
Apparently, while my girlfriend was trying to check in the woman working at the desk had no idea that I was supposed to be arriving and didn’t have any information that we were supposed to be checking in.
Since I was in correspondence with the owner in regards to my booking rather than having booked online there might have been a mix-up here but it was an awkward situation for my girlfriend until everything got sorted out.
When I finally got inside the woman was very eccentric and was making some weird noises, like she was mimicking me, rather than greeting me directly.
Anyways, she ended up bringing us to the room and gave us a few small details about the Wi-Fi and breakfast.
As for the interior of the hotel, I liked it very much and it was designed in a traditional Bavarian Style with wood paneling and classic furniture throughout the hotel.
There was a spacious lounge area that had plenty of seating and even a small electric fireplace which made it seem very cozy especially with the heavy rain coming down outside.
One thing I noticed is that there was a lack of natural lighting on the interior of the hotel and even the electric lighting wasn’t that efficient so the interior seemed very dark throughout the whole building.
At this point I was quite pleased with the hotel so far except for the unusual check-in experience but fortunately this is where the positive aspects of my stay came to an end.
Right after opening the door to my room I noticed immediately how small it was.
Directly in the center of the room was a bed and there were 2 small chairs on other side and apart from that there was hardly any floor space to move around.
A desk in the corner made the room seem even smaller and once our suitcases were opened up on the floor I don’t think there was any room left over or anything else.
With such a large building I definitely expected the rooms to be bigger although I guess if you just spending one night here and exploring the region all day then the lack of space really wouldn’t be a problem.
Unfortunately for me it was raining during almost my entire stay and I was trapped in the small room for many hours on end.
Not only was the room small but the bathroom was also surprisingly small and very cramped as well.
I was looking at pictures online before I came and in the photos everything looked quite modern and well-kept but in reality everything was outdated and there was lots of room for improvement and renovations, at least in the room I had.
One positive aspect of the room is that there was a large terrace that overlooked the parking lot and even though the weather was for it was still nice to sit outside, get some fresh air and enjoy the view.
Apart from the bed being a little too small I didn’t really run into any issues with it.
It was quite comfortable and although I wish that normal pillows were used rather than large square pillows I still was able to enjoy a comfortable night’s sleep and I woke up feeling quite well rested.
From the bed I was able to see outside the window so while I was laying down and falling asleep I could watch the stars outside or simply admire the view while I was relaxing after a long day of walking around.
A bigger bed would definitely have made for a more comfortable night but I would imagine it would take up even more space in the small room so it’s not surprising that the hotel chose to go with a smaller bed.
To be honest, the wi-fi at the Landgasthof Lindenhof Hotel was definitely one of the worst I’ve ever had to use in all of Europe.
It was incredibly slow and during peak times when many other of the hotel guests were online I was unable to maintain a reliable connection and the signal would constantly drop off.
Throughout my entire stay I was barely able to browse the internet and it wasn’t possible for me at all to upload a single photo, let alone a video.
Speaking of videos, I wasn’t even able to watch YouTube videos so during my stay I was stuck basically without a suitable internet connection.
If you’re not someone that uses the internet at all then this wouldn’t be a problem but if you’re looking to use social media or just do some basic web browsing then you’re going to run into some issues at this hotel.
For many people being able to connect with friends and family back home is very important and the hotel should definitely make some improvements with the speed and quality of the internet they provide.
I did not have a very positive experience with the bathroom at this hotel and it’s hard for me to find anything positive to write about.
The first thing I noticed is that the bathroom didn’t smell very good at all and it was extremely small and cramped, even for just one person.
Everything inside the bathroom was outdated and the shower could definitely use a serious scrub down just to make it suitable for regular use.
The shower door in my room also needed to be replaced immediately seeing as when it was opened it just simply didn’t work and apart from that it was covered in shower grime as well.
I’m not sure why the quality of the bathroom was so poor but this is yet again another area of the hotel that could definitely be improved and renovated.
I checked the price for a double room for random dates in October and if you’re interested in staying at this hotel you can expect to pay about $76 USD per night.
This price doesn’t actually include breakfast although for the location and proximity to the castles in the area I would say that it’s quite a reasonable amount, especially split between two people.
For one night, considering the features of this hotel as well as the free parking I would say that the price is quite fair but if you’re willing to spend a little bit extra you can definitely find some better options in the area.
One of the best aspects of the Landgasthof Lindenhof Hotel is its location.
It’s located just a short drive away from Neuschwanstein Castle, Fussen and a few other small German towns that are definitely worth checking out as well.
Also within a short driving distance are plenty of restaurants, grocery stores, cafes, bakeries and a few small shops.
The location is quite quiet and secluded and it’s great to go for a short walk at night just to stretch your legs and relax after a long day of exploring.
As for the hotel, it’s right off the side of the main road that runs through the region so if you’re driving it’s very easy to find.
Unfortunately, breakfast wasn’t included in my room rate and I wasn’t willing to spend the money on breakfast since there were so many options nearby for finding something to eat.
However, I didn’t notice breakfast to be very busy at all and I did see that there was a small selection of breakfast items available.
There is actually an on-site restaurant and I was interested in trying some of the menu items although when I asked the lady working at the front desk when it was going to open she said that only drinks were available and that the menu items weren’t going to be served.
It turned out that the restaurant wasn’t offering any menu items for both nights during my stay so I wasn’t able to get a chance to try it out.
If you’re looking for somewhere to eat there was a beautiful restaurant just down the street that offers a wide selection of traditional German foods for quite reasonable prices.
Parking and Accessibility
As I already mentioned, free parking is available on-site at the hotel.
The parking area is quite big and there is definitely even room available for motorhomes should that be your method of travel.
I didn’t notice any security but the area is quite secluded so I didn’t worry at all about my car while I was parked overnight.
As for accessibility, I’m not sure if the hotel can be easily reached by public transportation and I would actually recommend only visiting if you’re driving through the area rather than trying to figure out how to get there by bus or train.
Despite the many positive reviews online and the ideal location for exploring the region I wouldn’t actually recommend staying at the Landgasthof Lindenhof Hotel.
My experience wasn’t very positive at all and there are many improvements that the hotel could make so that guests were able to enjoy a more comfortable stay.
I would definitely recommend looking at some of the other options in the area and even spending a little bit more money to find somewhere that’s better suited for regular travellers.
This hotel could definitely use many renovations and I would even suggest that they either hire better staff or more effectively train the current staff members that are already employed.
I just want to mention that I am not a negative person at all and I’ve had hundreds of positive experiences at hotels throughout Europe so it’s very rare for me to not recommend somewhere.
