During my recent trip to Slovenia to check out the Ljubljana Christmas market I was fortunate enough to stay in one of the best apartment rentals I’ve ever been in.
Before I get into my Meščanka Apartment review let me explain a little bit more about the company and the other rooms and apartments they have available.
The Rooms and Apartments Meščanka
Perfectly situated in the heart of the Ljubljana Old Town, directly beside the canal, are the Meščanka rooms and apartments. They’re a series of rooms and apartments located in an old building that’s well within walking distance to all of the major tourist sites, restaurants, cafés and bars.
If you’re looking for more information about the rooms and apartments I suggest visiting their website here.
There are seven different options when it comes to the rooms and apartments they offer:
- 2 Double/Twin Rooms – Zofka and Minka
- 2 Standard Studios – Luiza and Lili
- 1 Superior Studio – Ljudmila
- 1 Superior One Bedroom – Ivana (the apartment I stayed in)
The Meščanka flats are all named after important women from Ljubljana ranging from famous painters and writers to poets and everything in between.
Each room is equipped with everything you’ll need for an enjoyable stay in the city. When you enter the building that the rooms and apartments are located in you’ll be able to speak with a knowledgeable attendant who will be able to provide you with all the information you’ll need to properly explore Ljubljana.
Guests will be pleased to find that each room offers air-conditioning, a comfortable place to sit after a long day of exploring such as a couch or cozy chairs, free high-speed Wi-Fi and a flatscreen TV.
From what I gather from looking at photos online all of the rooms come with wooden furnishings, a bright modern decor and an updated bathroom with shower.
Now that I’ve gone over the features and everything that Meščanka Apartments has to offer let’s take a look at my personal review.
The Apartments and Rooms Meščanka in Ljubljana [Hotel Review]
As I mentioned earlier I stayed in the Ivana Apartment and it’s the apartment that my review will be based off of.
For location, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better situated accommodation in Ljubljana.
The main square is just a few moments away and you can reach the castle on foot in under 30 minutes.
Down the street is the tourist office that you can visit if you’re looking for even more information on some of the best things to do in Ljubljana. They’ll also be able to help you organize a day trip to Lake Bled if that’s something you’re interested in doing.
Directly out front of the apartments are many different bars, restaurants and cafés. There is also an assortment of different shops, stores and other unique places to buy local goods, furniture, clothing, souvenirs and almost anything else you could want.
If you’re arriving by train or bus the stations are only a short 10 to 15 minute walk away and if you are driving there is a parking garage just around the corner.
The check-in process was streamlined and straightforward. The entrance to the apartments is located in a small passageway right off of one of the main pedestrian streets.
There is a small sign on the wall, right beside the door, telling you that you’re in the right place but otherwise the entranceway is quite nondescript and discrete.
After entering the apartment doorway into a small reception area I was directed by a young lady towards a small, private office. There was another young lady in the office who took my details, scanned my passport, gave me a map and some recommendations on where to eat, what to see and then led me to my room.
When we reached the room the young lady gave me a short explanation on how to access the Wi-Fi, how to open the door (which was quite tricky), and how to get into the building after the office had closed for the night.
The Ivana Apartment I stayed in was surprisingly spacious and had all the amenities I needed for a pleasant stay.
It’s listed as a studio but there is a separate bedroom along with a loft that can hold an additional two people. The apartment is comfortable enough for a family of four or for two different couples traveling together.
Right away I noticed how bright, airy and spacious the apartment was. The walls were lined with windows that offered a great view over the canal and the pedestrian walkways on both sides of it. From the loft I could even see part of the Ljubljana Castle!
In the entranceway was a small bench seat and some hooks for jackets. Directly beside the entranceway was one of the two bathrooms in the apartment and I found it was in the perfect place for washing my hands as soon as I returned from walking around the city.
There was a fully equipped kitchen with stove, fridge, dishwasher and all of the plates and cutlery I would need if I wanted to cook at home. There was even coffee and sugar laid out with instructions on how to brew a Turkish coffee.
In the living room area was a large, comfortable couch with a coffee table in front of it that was covered with maps and even more tourist information about the city.
There was a large dining table as well and if you’re planning on cooking in the apartment it’s the perfect table for a group of 4 to eat from or sit around trading travel stories over a bottle of wine.
A surprising feature of the Ivana Apartment was the full walk-in closet. It was great for storing my luggage and for organizing all of the clothes that I had brought for my trip. In hotels I usually end up throwing my clothes wherever there is space but having a walk-in closet was a great feature to help me stay organized.
The bedroom is simple, only a large bed in the middle of the room, with a window right above the bed that offers great lighting into the room itself. From the bedroom was access to the second bathroom where there was a large tub and an additional toilet.
It was great having a tub to use, rather than a simple standup shower, and I even enjoyed a bath during my visit to Ljubljana.
Comfort + Sleep
I found everything in the apartment to be exceptionally comfortable.
The couch was modern, clean and roomy enough for two people to relax on after a long day of walking around.
The bed was also comfortable with a firm mattress, firm pillows and soft, fluffy sheets. At night the bedroom got very dark so there wasn’t any natural light waking you up too early in the morning. Each night, apart from the noise of the partiers down on the pedestrian streets below, I was able to get a great nights sleep.
I didn’t sleep in the loft but it was also spacious, bright and perfect for two people to sleep in. The loft added an additional private space so that if two couples were traveling together both of the couples would be able to enjoy their own space sleep in and relax.
Many hotel rooms are quite cramped but the Ivana Apartment seemed almost too large for just two people. It was great being able to walk around and not having to worry about bumping into my girlfriend.
The kitchen was also spacious and I could see it being ideal for cooking or preparing meals if that is something you’re into.
I don’t think there are any hotels in the city with a better view than what you’ll get at the Ivana Apartment at Meščanka. Each of the windows offers a different viewpoint over the city and you can look out from all directions throughout the apartment.
It was great heading back to the apartment after a long day of walking around the city and opening the windows to look out over the rooftops and watch all of the other tourists and locals going about their day.
At night you could smell a variety of different aromas from the various restaurants down below wafting in through the windows. Since the apartment was so high up none of the lights from the surrounding buildings, or streetlights, shined into the apartment so when it got dark it made for a very romantic setting.
As I mentioned earlier the Meščanka Apartments are situated in an ideal location. If you’re not able to walk you might need to take a taxi from the train/bus station but otherwise everything else in the city can be accessed on foot from these apartments.
Here’s a quick list of how far away all of the main attractions in Ljubljana are on foot:
- Ljubljana Castle: 20-minutes
- The Three Bridges: 3-minutes
- Tivoli City Park: 20-minutes
- Neboticnik Skyscraper: 7-minutes
- Tourist Office: 5-minutes
- Local Market: 5-minutes
The only thing I disliked about the apartment was how noisy it got in the evenings.
Since its location is so great, right above the main pedestrian zone, there are countless people visiting the bars, cafes and clubs late at night. Unfortunately, there are quite a few people in the area on weekend nights and they tend to get quite rowdy as the night progresses.
From about 10pm until 2am you can hear people screaming, shouting and the continuous hum of a large crowd of party-goers enjoying themselves.
I’m a deep sleeper, so I was only woken up a few times by people shouting, but if you’re a light sleeper you might have a problem sleeping through the entire night uninterrupted.
Keep in mind that I visited during the Christmas market and Advent festivals so there were many more tourists in Ljubljana during this time. I’d expect it to be the same during summer weekends but during the off-season or on weekdays it should be much quieter.
In an attempt to keep things quiet in the apartment double-glazed windows have been added to prevent any of the noise from causing any disturbances. In my opinion they’re quite effective but it’s hard to block out the especially noisy and drunk individuals that sometimes scream and shout in the early morning.
This isn’t the apartment’s fault and actually goes to show how great the location is.
My stay at the Meščanka Apartments in Ljubljana was one of the best apartment accommodation stays I’ve had in more than three years of traveling throughout Europe.
The apartment was beautiful, it had the best location that any visitor to Ljubljana could ask for and the service was incredible.
I didn’t really know what to expect before getting to the apartment but after leaving I realized it had set the bar extremely high in regards to any future apartment stays I have.

If you’re looking for the best place to stay in Ljubljana I highly recommend the Meščanka Apartments.
I find the hotel experience to be quite impersonal so I’m always on the look out for unique and one-of-a-kind places to stay during my travels.
The Meščanka Apartments are perfect if you’re looking for a comfortable, homely and affordable apartment-style accommodation in Slovenia’s beautiful capital city.
On my next trip to Ljubljana I plan to stay in the Meščanka Apartments and I highly recommend to do the same if you want to enjoy an unforgettable Slovenian travel experience.
