I’ve met a lot of people while traveling and when it comes to talking about where everyone has been you don’t hear too many people say Innsbruck.
I’m not sure why since it’s a beautiful place nestled in the heart of the Alps with plenty of different things to see and do but I think a lot of people are more interested in seeing Vienna, Hallstatt and Salzburg with Innsbruck being just an afterthought.
That’s better for me I guess since I was able to walk around without having to worry too much about the crowds and during the morning and late afternoon I pretty much had the city to myself!
Anyways, I’ll leave talking about things to do in Innsbruck to another post.
Today, I want to talk about the best accommodation in Innsbruck and why I would recommend the Penz Hotel if you’re looking for somewhere suitable to stay.
The Penz Hotel: The Best Boutique Hotel in Innsbruck?
There are plenty of different hotels to choose from in the city and one thing I noticed when I was browsing through them on HotelsCombined.com is that a lot of them took on more of a traditional/classical look.
This isn’t a problem if that’s what you’re interested in but if you’re looking for something completely updated, modern and chic then you’re definitely going to be pleased with what the Penz has to offer.
The Penz Hotel in Innsbruck
The Penz Hotel is situated right in the heart of Innsbruck and strives at providing guests with a highly rated option when it comes to luxury accommodation.
Apart from modern and updated rooms guests are able to take advantage of an incredible breakfast, a beautiful rooftop bar, comfortable and spacious rooms and essentially everything else that’s needed when you’re spending a few days away from home.
It’s hard to pick a single favorite thing of mine about the hotel because I loved every aspect of it and there wasn’t anything that I could complain about during my 2-night stay.
With more than 90 rooms available you’ll be able to choose from a range of different room types including a deluxe room, standard triple, junior suite and even a superior double among others.
While the hotel is modern and luxurious that doesn’t mean it’s not well suited for families as well.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a business traveler looking to secure your next deal abroad or if you’re just traveling through Central Europe with your friends or family, the Penz Hotel has you covered when it comes to fine accommodation in Innsbruck.
Now that I’ve told you a little bit about the basics of this stunning accommodation, let’s take a look at my review.
The Jewel of Innsbruck: My Review of the Penz Hotel
When I first walked into the lobby I was taken aback by its simplicity and attention to detail.
For a modern luxury hotel it’s surprising that there weren’t any gaudy paintings or awkward statues anywhere, rather the lobby just took advantage of an open-air and simple layout that is very welcoming to guests that have spent time and effort traveling to reach the hotel.
There were two young ladies working and I was able to check in right away without having to wait.
One thing I noticed right away was the small bowl of apples available which is great if you’re looking for a quick snack or just want something light to munch on before heading out to explore the city.
After going through the details of checking in I was given a map and showing some of the main sights in Innsbruck.
The young lady gave me some tips on some restaurants and cafes nearby and suggested a few things that I could check out during my stay.
Overall, the check-in process was very quick and within 10 minutes of walking into the lobby I was already on the way to my room armed with a map, plenty information and ready to check out what awaited me.
The Interior of the Hotel
As I walked through the hotel to my room I couldn’t help but notice that the interior was very similar to what I saw in the lobby.
Everything was very modern and updated and the interior gave off a very luxurious and stylish vibe.
The elevator to my room was quite a spectacle and as you can see from some of my photos the exterior of the hotel is actually made completely of glass.
Right when you walk into the elevator, which is completely see-through by the way, you’re presented with an incredible view across the street of a lovely building and you can see down another one of the side streets where there are mountains looming in the distance.
All of the windows at the front mean that the lobby and all of the other walking areas are always very brightly lit from natural light and it never seems stuffy at all when you’re walking around.
Right after opening the door to my room I couldn’t help but notice the large window at the end of the room.
The windows match the vibe of the rest of the hotel and let in plenty of natural light while offering a great view, which in my case was over the small square directly beside the hotel.
I opened the window to let in some of the cool breeze from outdoors and that’s when I noticed I was also able to see some more of the Alps off in the distance.
The view was amazing and if you’re interested in enjoying an awesome view during your stay at the Penz be sure to ask for one of the rooms on a higher floor that faces the square, the view doesn’t disappoint!
Apart from the view I found the room to be quite spacious and it offered more than enough space for two people.
There was seating in the form of a small couch and plenty of storage space for luggage so that nothing has to be in your way when you’re trying to spend time relaxing at the end of the day.
Of course, one of the first things I do whenever I get into a hotel room is jump directly onto the bed and test it for comfort, durability and to see what the blanket and pillow set-up is like.
I found the bed to be extremely comfortable, not too soft or too hard, and it came with two separate blankets so that each person sleeping is able to control their own comfort and coverage level.
From the bed I also had a great view out the window and I was able to see the mountains which made it even more relaxing whenever I was laying down during the day.
Hotels in Europe are quite hit-and-miss when it comes to wireless internet connection and thankfully the Hotel Penz was a hit.
From my room on the fourth floor I was able to connect quite quickly, upload photos without any lag, browse the web, use Instagram and even upload a video to YouTube In a reasonable amount of time.
Even during peak internet usage hours in the early morning and late at night I didn’t find any issues with connectivity and my connection never dropped from any of my devices.
Overall, the internet at the hotel is great and if you’re traveling for business and need a reliable connection or you just want your kids to be able to stay in touch with their friends back at home you don’t have to worry about any wireless issues at the Penz.
Following along with the modern and minimalist look of the hotel along with the hotel room, the bathroom exhibited the same properties.
One of the best features that I noticed was the large glass piece that made up part of the wall which helped to let in natural light and doesn’t make it as dark or gloomy in the bathroom like you find in some hotels where the bathroom is more of a dark closet with awkward lighting.
The bathroom was very bright, colorful and it came packed with any of the amenities that you would need for getting ready or cleaning up in the bathroom after a long day of working or exploring Innsbruck.
It was very modern, clean and there was a shower/bathtub combination so you could choose to either take a bath and relax or have a quick shower if you need to get out the door in a hurry.
Plenty of towels were available as well.
As for the bathroom amenities, they were supplied by The Good Mandarine and I found that they smelled lovely and fresh so I had no problems using them.
The amenities included:
- 100% natural hair shampoo
- 100% natural shower gel
- Body milk (lotion)
- Luxury bath salts (for adding to your bath)
- Nail care kit
- Small vanity kit (razor, shower cap, etc)
The amenities provided were very high quality and are great to use if you forgot anything at home or if you’re just looking for something more to use when you’re getting ready or cleaning up for the night.
I checked the price for a random weekday in mid-September and prices start as low as $314 per night for two people for a superior double room.
If you’re traveling solo it’s likely you’ll be able to find a better rate. Keep in mind that rates change depending on how far in advance you book and whether or not you’re traveling during any holidays or special events.
The location of the Penz Hotel is simply amazing.
The hotel is only steps away from the main square in Innsbruck and within 10-minutes walking I was able to reach all of the popular tourist sites and things to do.
Also within walking distance are plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes, nightclubs and it’s not even that far to reach the station where you can catch a ride to the top of the nearby mountain via cable-car.
Attached to the hotel is a small shopping center which also leads to the main square so apart from having direct access to do some shopping there are also a variety of different routes you can take to get anywhere you want to be in the city.
I found the location to be superb and I was able to thoroughly explore Innsbruck without ever venturing too far from the hotel.
On the top floor of the hotel is a classy American-style bar known as the 5th Floor that offers an incredible view over the city and off the Alps off in the distance.
I don’t drink very often so I only went up to the bar to check it out but I was very impressed with what I found.
The view was amazing and I loved the fact that there was both outdoor and indoor seating available depending on your preferences.
Although I didn’t order anything the bartender was immediately attentive and inquired as to whether or not I wanted anything to drink just a few moments after stepping into the bar space.
There is a wide range of different types of alcohol available and if you’re looking for a cocktail, mixed drink, glass of wine or you want something straight like rum, whiskey or gin you’ll definitely be able to partake in the rooftop bar.
Additionally, there’s a smoking lounge with an outdoor deck for open-air smoking and a selection of cigars are available for purchase as well.
Breakfast is held in the same space where the 5th Floor bar operates during the day.
This means that even during breakfast you’re able to enjoy a beautiful view over Innsbruck and if you’re visiting during the summer you can choose to sit outdoors on the covered patio or indoors.
Out of all of the different hotels I’ve visited throughout Europe the Penz offered one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever seen.
The spread was out-of-this-world and there were so many different options to choose from it was impossible to just fill your plate once and be satisfied.
I had to go up a few times to try everything out and to get a taste of everything that was offered.
The hot foods available included eggs, sausages, potatoes, bacon and even springrolls.
There was also a large selection of different breads available along with pastries and even these amazing pretzels that came with a delicious sweet mustard.
As is common in Europe a large spread of cold cuts and cold cheese was laid out and there were way too many different jams and fruit spreads for me to count, let alone try them all.
A selection of juices was available and also the waitstaff were more than willing to prepare any hot coffee drink you wanted (of course I opted for the cappuccino, which was quite tasty by the way).
Overall, the breakfast was one of the many amazing things about the Hotel Penz and if you’re looking to start your day off right I would definitely recommend checking out the breakfast options.
Some of the rooms come with breakfast included and if not you’re able to attend breakfast for just 30 euro.
Parking at the hotel was on-site which makes things a lot easier for people driving.
You simply park underneath the hotel and to reach the lobby there is an elevator that goes directly to the lobby floor.
Parking was quite reasonably priced and there were a large amount of spots available so even though I arrived quite late in the day I was still able to find a spot.
I found the parking to be secure and I didn’t worry about the car at all when it was parked underground in the large garage.
If you ever asked me where the best place to stay in Innsbruck was I’d have to honestly recommend the Penz Hotel.
The location is amazing, the service is world-class and it offers an understated luxury that’s a lot easier to enjoy than hotels that simply try too hard to be something they’re not.
It’s an elegant and modern place to spend the night or even a few days if you’re traveling for business or if you’re just bringing your family to explore one of Austria’s loveliest cities.
As the first design hotel in Innsbruck, the Penz is bound to impress you and it’s such a comfortable, welcoming and enjoyable place to stay that it wouldn’t be fair for me to really recommend anywhere else.
With all the different amenities available, quality of service and other great features like the full-buffet breakfast I definitely suggest checking out the Penz Hotel for yourself and seeing what it’s like to spend a wonderful time visiting Innsbruck!
