This past summer I spent three months living in Romania and for two of those months I lived in Brasov
If you haven’t heard of it before Brasov is one of the most picturesque and popular cities in Transylvania, the mountainous region where the Carpathian mountains cut through the heart of Romania.
After just a few days in Brasov I realized that a car would be necessary if I wanted to explore the region and experience all the best that Transylvania had to offer.
Sure, I could’ve used a combination of buses and train’s to explore all of the different cities but if I wanted to check out more of the natural areas and hard-to-reach places then a car would have been a better idea.
With that in mind I went online and started looking at my options for car rentals in Brasov.
A few different options came up, and a couple of times I came across suggestions that it would be a better idea to head to Bucharest to rent a car there instead. However, one company kept coming up and I decided to email them to see what they they could offer me.
Autonom Rent a Car was the company I emailed and it was through them that I was able to rent a car for two months.
From the beginning I was very pleased with the quality of service and professionalism that I experienced through the emails were going back-and-forth and even on the phone when I had to call in to confirm a few things.
Even before picking up the car the people working at Autonom were already making an effort to cater to my needs.
For example, I had originally booked the rental car for just one week but after looking at some more information online about Transylvania and calculating the distances between the different cities and areas that I wanted to check out I realized I would need a lot longer with the car. They had no problem extending my rental to two months and they even offered a generous discount for such a long-term rental.
A few days before the rental period started I called one last time to go over all the details. The lady that I spoke to on the phone was very polite and had no problem going over all of the rental details while answering all the questions I had regarding insurance, the features that the car had and whether or not there were any limits when it came to how many kilometers I could go.
Everything was very straightforward, I was able to travel unlimited kilometers and the insurance I had was all inclusive, which meant that it covered anything that happened to the car as long as the tires or windows weren’t seriously damaged.
Finally, the day came where I could finally pick up my car and to my surprise Autonom offered to drop it off at my apartment ather than me having to go pick it up in the busy city center.
This was awesome because I didn’t have to worry about making my way to the pick up location and I could leave from my apartment rather than having to navigate through the busy city streets of Brasov.
It was just after 11 in the morning when three guys from Autonom came to drop off the car. I only spoke with one of them and he was very professional with an excellent command over the English language so there were no problems going over the paperwork and having everything about the car explained to me.
Together we looked over everything to make sure that the car was in pristine operating condition. The young man showed me how everything worked on the inside and then explained to me that he would be back in two months to pick it up. The gas tank was totally full, all of the tires had the optimal air pressure and both the interior and exterior of the car were very clean.
For reference, the car I was given was a 2015 Opel Astra. It had less than 7000 km on it and it still seemed that it was brand-new.
Because I’m a dumb Canadian it came with an automatic transmission, rather than a manual, but this was a better choice and it made it easier to deal with all of the hills and tight turns that I would experience later in the trip. The interior was spacious, comfortable and there was even a USB port that hooked up directly to my iPod so that I could listen to my own music through the cars stereo system.
I had never driven an Opel Astra before but for a fairly basic, entry-level sedan I found it to be the perfect choice for going on a road trip through Romania with. The gas mileage is quite good, getting nearly 1000 km on highway driving and around 700 km if I was doing mostly city driving.
Keep in mind that you may experience worse mileage depending on the terrain and how you drive. I made a conscious effort to stretch out the mileage as far as I could and if you drive more aggressively then you won’t get nearly as good mileage. I put on more than 5000 km in two months of driving and never once did I experience any problems with the car.
To be up front there was nowhere I avoided going with the Astra and at no point was I ever worried about the car getting stuck or not being able to handle the terrain ahead of me.
It was able to handle both of the uphill and downhill drives along with the many tight turns and hairpin corners without any issues. At one point I experienced snow at the top of the Transfagarasan and the car handled the wet roads with ease.
A few other times I was driving through national parks on dirt roads where sometimes the mud would reach over the bottom limit of the door and I still never got stuck or had any problems navigating across some of the worst roads I’ve ever seen.
This was actually quite surprising to me because when I thought of driving an entry-level Opel Astra Sedan I never thought it would be able to handle all of what it went through.
Autonom actually had a smaller car available as well but I’m glad I went with the sedan. The extra room was nice to have and I never had to jam in any of my luggage or worry about not having enough space if I ever had to pick someone up.
After driving the car for two months through the heart of Transylvania and across most of Romania it was time to bring it back. Throughout the entire rental period I kept in touch with Autonom through email and they were able to answer any of the questions I had and address any of my concerns as well.
When it came time to return the car they offered to come pick it up rather than have me drop it off directly at the main office. Again, I was very thankful for this pick up service and just like when they dropped it off the entire process went smoothly without any issues.
When the guys came to pick it up we walked around the entire car just to make sure everything was the same as when I first got it. There weren’t any issues here and after signing some paperwork they got into the car and off they drove.
Overall, I had a wonderful experience with Autonom Rent a Car.
If you’re looking to rent a car in Brasov and you want to the deal with the company that professional, affordable, dependable and that’s strives to meet all of your requirements I definitely recommend renting your car through Autonom.
It’s safe to say that they’ve set the bar high for any of the future rentals that I take advantage of and I can only hope that whenever I rent a car again that I’ll be able to enjoy the same high standards and quality customer service that was provided by Autonom.
